Subject: [SoundDiver] Saving patches and libraries
Message #17704
I'm running SD on OSX10.4. It generally seems to run OK, but I have the following problems:- 1. I am confused about the process of saving patches and libraries. In the manual it says that when you click on 'Store' after editing a patch, a dialogue box should come up so that you can choose what location to store your patch. This doesn't happen for me - in fact nothing seems to happen when I press 'Store' or 'Store in' so I have no idea if my patches are being saved. 2. When I edit on SD and save, does this save changes on the machine as well, or just in SD? 3. I seem to have to re-scan my Xpander synth everytime I open SD, even though there is a dedicated module for it - this is quite annoying. 4. The controls seem to be very stiff/slow and makes me feel like i'd prefer to edit on the machine itself and just use SD for viewing the status of parameters - anyone else feel this way? Judging by the stiffness of the controls, I guess controlling parameters in realtime similar to continuous controllers is out of the question, but I would like to able to use SD as a patch librarian to keep patches safe and have unlimited storage. Can anyone give me a few tips on the above queries to make this a bit easier to understand? Thanks! Brett

All SD 3.0 CDs are cross-platform, same about 2.0 CDs (don't know about earlier versions as my first one was 2.0.5). Best, Andy

When I edit on SD and save, does this save changes on the machine >as well, or just in SD? You must understand that SD does several things: 1 - It can "grab" the sounds from your hardware for editing and re-arranging banks etc 2 - You can create new sounds from scratch 3 - You can create libraries for storing and backing-up your sounds. 4 - You can send sounds/banks back to your hardware ......and more.... You must have 2-way MIDI contact with your hardware for any interchange to take place. When you STORE, you are saving data on your HARDWARE (The icon with the arrow and !) When you SAVE, you are saving data on your computer. (File menu/Save) Try this: Request all the sounds from your hardware, or even just a bank of sounds. Open a new Library: [File] menu - [New] - it will be blank. Select one or more sounds from your Instrument Editor window and drag them to the new Library window. Hit [Save] or [Save as] - give it a title. You now have a LIBRARY of sounds which may, for example, be a backup of all your factory sounds on your hardware. If you now edit any of the sounds/patches and STORE them to your hardware, and later regret having done this, you can open your Library (which you just made) and send (Store) the original sound back to the location on the hardware and overwrite your edit. So, now that you have saved your original sounds, do a test: Edit a sound and make a few radical changes. Try to STORE the sound to the hardware, either in a new location or the same one. Play your hardware via a MIDI keyboard - do you get the new sound? >3. I seem to have to re-scan my Xpander synth everytime I open SD, >even though there is a dedicated module for it - this is quite >annoying. You need to request all the sounds, then when you quit SD, [Save Preferences] Next time your sounds should be there still. If you don't Save prefs, they won't be kept. >4. Can anyone give me a >few tips on the above queries to make this a bit easier to understand? See above. You can sets of banks for different jobs or songs which you can then open in SD, and transmit the sounds to your hardware. If you keep a backup as I suggested, you'll never lose anything. I also keep libraries of favourite sounds, so that when I'm looking for good sounds, I can quickly browse through these first. You can obviously keep adding to your "favourites" library every time you find a good new sound that you like. Hope this helps Colin

Subject: Sony HR-MP5 processor
Message #17710
Do any of you have or know how to reset the Sony HR-MP5 processor? I have two of them. Neither of them will fire up. I have replaced the lithium battery in both about two years ago but have had them shut off and sitting on the shelf for about a year and a half. All I get is a very faint light blue glow on the screen. Is it possible that even though the lithium batteries were new, 1 1/2 years is just too long to sit on the shelf? or Does it need to be reset? How? In case I don't figure out how to navigate to the proper place to view any responses, could you e-mail me at : stevec1@charter.net Steve

Hi, My HR-MP5 has the battery problem, too. The RAM contents are garbled and it crashes the system. And I hear it needs soldering to change batteries. When this happens, I do the following. 1) Detach the AC adapter plug from HR-MP5. 2) Push the power button (without AC adapter). It discharges the residual electricity. Do this again if needed. Then my MP5 starts working again (at least mine does). Be careful not to select RAM patch before you write something onto it. The garbled patch data crashes MP5 again. OK, I am a little farther. I changed the lithium battery in it and it does turn on now, but the display is as about as dim as it can get. I went to "system" then "display". I see in the farthest upper right hand corner it looks like this.. 1 _ _ _ _ which I am guessing this is telling me that there are five settings and I have it on the lowest, being 1. I I can't figure out how to move the curor over to any of the other five incriments to see if the display brightens up! When I move the jog wheel, all it does is change the display function back and forth between "name" and "info", but never changing the incriment levels.... frustrating.... Any of you I can call and talk to on the phone? I am in the Central time zone. Steve

Don't know anything about the HR-MP5, but a good lithium battery used for memory backup usually lasts much longer (have had one in my DX7 for more than 20 years). Of course it's possible that something in the device has gone bad and draws much more current from the battery. Ingo

Replacing the battery requires a battery holder to be fitted unless you can find an exact replacement. Nasty job for someone in a hurry without the right parts to hand. The board has to be completely disconnected to make sure you don't stress the mini molex connectors. I normally take all the panels off and tighten the pots and sockets while I'm visiting. Also worth checking the solder connections to the power in socket and the jacks, they take a direct hit when the unit slides off the top of the handle on your Mesa Boogie. I use a solid sleeved wire to convert the holder to have pins which align with the holes in the board. I've done a few, and you have to reset the device after. The lack of contrast is a give-away. I failed to find the reset code immediately, but I tried the typical 2 or 3 button press sequences. Holding the BYPASS and EXIT buttons while powering up erases all the user memory, andf everything looks normal, saves to user memory etc. Could be wrong, mine wasn't previously scrambled, but I'm 99% sure that's it. Then you need a dump of the presets you took before the machine got too flaky. When new they have a duplicate factory set, which I duped by copying all the P patches into the U patches one by one, good for testing the dump restore process which can be tedious over the changing platforms over the years. I've used Sounddiver mostly, but Cakewalk 3.0 did it with sysx fine, although you can't see if the memory is worth anything until you reload it in a machine. My two MP5's got new backlights for Christmas, they fade quickly when you leave them on for years at a time. MIDI-rakete.de had them, and lots of others. Good service, decent prices

Les, You have helped me tremendously! I have replaced the battery in one unit with a battery that "Batteries Plus" did the spot welding of the tabs for me. I would how ever like to use a lithium battery holder for the other unit. I did try the resetting you spoke of, pressing BYPASS and EXIT while booting the unit. That did make it so I can at least read the screen. How ever, when I go to system > setup > display, in the far upper righthand corner I see what appears to be the incriment levels " 1 _ _ _ _" . I can't find any combination of buttons or jog to change the level. All that I can get the unit to do is in display mode, change from name to info and the just below the level incriment bar is another incriment level bar that looks like this, 0------ When I move the jog wheel to the left, the "O" is all the way to the extream left. If I move it to the right, the "o" moves to the far extream right, and it doesn't move by incriment either. Could it be that I need a new backlight as you spoke of? do you know of a link that has a picture of the thing so I can see what it looks like? Thanks' Steve www.stevecoxproductions.com

I used to have several of these Sony effectors, After replacing the battery, your user presets will still be trashed, and simply selecting a user preset will crash the unit. IIRC, the reset procedure is to hold the Bypass and exit buttons while powering the unit up. That should clear all user presets and settings (Like the display contrast) to factory defaults

Maybe none of us have a Sony HR-MP5 in this group as this is not that common an effects unit and this group focuses on SoundDiver software and it's control of equipment and not necessarily any of the specific equipment itself...... I looked for another Yahoo group that might have that Sony effects box discussion but found none. I recommend either Sony support directly or Yahoo/Google search a studio that might still show someone using this gear in their equipment list and email them and see if they can help you..... Hello group, I bought a s/h Peavey PC-1600 controller but I´ve found SD can´t find the adaption. I get an older one and tried with no luck. Further investigation lead me to the conclusion that my SD can´t see some stuff wich is in the adaptations folder... For example: there´s nothing between Mackie and Quasimidi in the adaptations list in SD...nor oberheim nor peavey...neither can see lexicon, memorymoog, sequential circuits and lots more. I´m on Intel..OS 10.4.9 . Does somebody have a similar problem? I trashed prefs reinstalled, etc. I´m using SD beta 3.1 (the last one). I did a search here but coudn´t find related threads.... regards

On Windows SD would not find adaptaions when there were more than 255 or so in the adaptations folder. It would be surprising if this was a problem in the 3.1 beta on Mac, there it would be more likely that some adaptations don't have the right type/creator set. You should be able to find out by checking the file properties in the finder.
