Check Apple's ftp site for updates in case you have the 3.0 installation CD. Subject: [SoundDiver] Is there a way to run SoundDiver 3.0 on Mac OSX? don't have XS key.
Message #17683
I have SoundDiver 3.0 with the original manual and CD. I originally purchased this quite a while ago for use on a Windows machine. Now I'm running OS 10.4 on a silver mac powerbook. I'd really like to use SoundDiver on this machine. I searched around a bit and found that there is a public beta for OSX that looks like it would work but that it requires an XS key. I'm not sure what this is but it sounds like a hardware dongle for logic which I do not have. Is there any way for me to run the software that I've purchased on this mac? I don't have the OS9. Am I out of luck? I've been looking and looking for something that does what SoundDiver did for me on Windows and have had no luck finding anything else suitable. If possible I'd like to keep using it. Thanks, Scott

Hi Scott, So you can't install OS 9 on your PB? I guess you might want to buy a used OS 9 capable Mac or PC for that. Otherwise I see no way of using it if you don't have Logic... Sorry for the bad news. The beta version requires the key, which you only get when you buy Logic7 and then it works a treat. I believe the best thing you can do is have a second hard drive with OS9.** as its entire belief system, install the driver for your MIDI interface and then install Sounddiver 3.0 from the CD, re-authorising every month. That works for me, OS9.22, Unitor8 which does SMPTE , or AMT8. A partitioned drive works too, but you need to do that before you install the OS, sounds like you're already past that stage. Bear in mind that if you own the CD you can install it on any number of your machines, so a seperate mac with OS9 only is fine. I have a beige G3 which was £20 including mouse and keyboard. Also a MIDI interface is cheaper for the ADB bus, which may be an issue. I migrated from Windows where Sounddiver worked but a little quirkily on some instruments. It works better on mac I think. There are a few minor issues with Windows-saved libraries, and ISO9660 saved Libraries, which can be circumvented using zip or memory sticks. The mac puts the trash and a few other files on there, but no real harm it would seem.

If you have classic installed you can still run the OS9 version of Sounddiver under OSX There is a utility called MidiBridge that communicates between OMS and Core MIDI

Somewhere along the way Apple updated something that allowed the two to communicate without a 3rd party app. Theres a catch though.. You have to be able to boot into OS 9, configure OMS properly.. Then boot back into OS X and run Sound Diver in classic. It should now work just fine as it used to. I remember this being the case, but I could be off a bit. One more catch.. Dont try opening up any carbon/cocoa/os x application that will require your midi interface.. Think you may have to actually log out and back in before running another app in OS X but it might just require you to quit SD.. Its been along time since I had to do it that way.. FWIW - The old OS 9 editor for Clavia's Nord Modular works the same way under Classic as well.. :D -- Chris http://www.monotrematamusic.com http://www.myspace.com/monotremata http://www.descentrecords.com

I think you should disable midi thru = on. Else, incoming midi sysex messages will be sent back to the computer .... resulting in a joyfull chaos ... or golden silence.

Hi Brett, I have a Matrix 12 that I use with Soundiver. I use soundiver standalone, just as a patch librarian. I think the M12/Xpander SD implementation is very good. I use nuendo to sequence the M12, and I use the lever 1, pedal 1, velocity, and pressure as my controllers for each voice (like if I want to change aspects of the sound during a sequence). I don't find the sysex to be as useful as I'd like, have you tried sysex control of voice params? Lever 2 and pedal 2 unfortunataly are NOT specific to each midi channel voice, do you have this same experience? BTW, if you have any patches you'd like to trade let me know. Randy

My Matrix 12 is THE reason that I purchased Soundiver 5 years ago... and it's the reason that I still keep SD active on my studio PC. The SD implementation is rock solid and stand-alone editing works CORRECTLY; I also have MQXL 9, but only use it as a librarian as editing the M-12 with it sometimes produces unpredictable results and it has to use a patch location as a 'holding place' for the edit. I am useless to this discussion as the original question was about changing parameters via sysex commands in Logic, but thought that I would jump in as an M-12 owner and say that if you want to contact me off-list about patches or anything else regarding the M-12, feel free. --Dean
