Thus my assumptions were correct :-)
Actually there is no Sounddiver either as far as I know, for the Atari
ST platform, but you probably mean that there is no Soundsurfer at all
for any platform (it only existed for the Atari ST, didn't it?).

Ouch!!!!! :-(

Oh no :-(

But that's fine as long as nothing bad happens to your original disk.
I'd hate for my one and only copy of my software investments to stop
working, that's why I'd really prefer a dongle instead of this kind of
copy protection.

I'll ask him when he gets back in a few days time.
Hopefully he'll have the program installed on a harddisk somewhere, but
if not -what do I do? Is it possible to get any help from Emagic?
I don't know exactly how this copy protection scheme works, but it
seems that the "master" disk (disk 1) contains a special file of
some
sort with the serial number etc. and in order to install a
self-contained working copy on a harddisk you have to move that file
from the floppy (i.e. remove the key from the floppy) and transfer it
over to the harddisk. Correct?
If this is right it seems like a rather risky way for the end-user
since I read that even just a defragmentation will wipe it away, and
what about a harddisk crash?
I respect and understand why there is software copy protection, but I
find it hard to understand a scheme which makes the investement for the
legitimate owner so unsafe and troublesome.
I just want to use the software, not fiddle around with installment
problems.
Getting back to the installation....
I had another go at it, but still suffer from problems! Here's what I did:
1)removed all the existing Sounddiver files from the harddisk
2)installed Sounddiver 1.5e from the original Emagic disks. So far so
good. No error messages. Just the mentioned message telling me that
I'll have to stick the "Master disk" into the drive each time).
3)I try running the program -it works fine.
4)I decide to upgrade it to the latest version, so I take out the first
of many Sounddiver 2.06 disks, and double click "install.prg". I
then
select "update".
5)I'm asked to select the existing (previously installed)
"diver.prg"
on the harddisk with the file-selector, so that's what I do.
6)The drives start whirring as the installment starts. All's fine...
7)but then I get an error message....
At first the floppy disk is read and the progress display says:
"Reading diver.prg".
Then after a short while I get an error message saying:
"An error occured during deinstallation" [Abort] [Continue]".
The progress display in the background reads "Deinstalling
diver.prg",
so apparently it has something to do with some sort of deinstallation,
but what's to deinstall????
If you're correct, the previous owner has the key which allows me to
install a self-contained version (or it's been lost), so now what?
Was this the error message you got as well, which caused you to loose your
key?
To rule out the different causes of the problem I've tried updating
from both the version 2.06 disks and the 1.57 disks, and to simplify it
even more I've taken care to only select the sounddiver program and not
anything else (modules etc.).
Same error message no matter what I do.
