On Windows SD would not find adaptaions when there were more than 255 or so in the adaptations folder. It would be surprising if this was a problem in the 3.1 beta on Mac, there it would be more likely that some adaptations don't have the right type/creator set. You should be able to find out by checking the file properties in the finder.
