Subject: [SoundDiver] Sound Diver, Mac Tiger, Unitor8, and Logic Audio combo.
Message #17615
Just because it's topical... I've been through the ringer with Sound Diver. I was a HUGE fan of the original release of SD and associated hardware. Currently, I have four Unitor8's, stacked. I control a myriad of MIDI gear with them... including several outboard synths, guitar pedals, effects boxes and Radar24. ONE MONTH after I purchased a Logic Control MIDI surface, eMagic closed their doors. To say I was angry is an understatement. I'm thankful they came out with one final public beta for SoundDiver to make it compatible with OS/X though. I've used SoundDiver for years, along with Logic. My original platform was PC, but I moved it all (finally) to a Mac G5 a few years ago. I currently use SoundDiver to manage my Unitor8's, but rarely use it to edit synth patches because the communication is way too unstable. Instead, I usually edit on the synths themselves, then upload the data to SoundDiver. Using SoundDiver with live synth improvisation is just plain frustrating... it locks up over and over and over... I would LOVE to move to MidiQuest (or any other competative synth librarian / editor), but Unitor8's are a bit proprietary, and as far as I know, no other software is available that can program them... and I have little faith it could communicate as well with Logic. Let me know if there are any, please! Yes, SD is a bit unstable. It crashes when I attempt to do ANY realtime work with my Novation Supernova II, and it doesn't like my Roland V-synth at all, despite my home-made adaptation for it. Part of the reason (I believe) is long cable lengths between my Unitor8's (they aren't LITERALLY stacked, in fact they are spread out through the studio). To further complicate things, I have a friend (a drummer) that uses his OWN computer setup, which we integrate into mine for live studio sessions. He, too, uses Logic... version 5.1 on the PC, and has his own Unitor8. Synchronizing everything is at best tricky, and sometime nightmarish. There are a few situations where it's just plain impossible to do something (like trying to use MMC to control the Radar from his computer, for example). There may be a better solution than my Unitor8 / SoundDiver / Logic setup, but I have yet to see it. The best routers I've seen can only be stacked 3 deep, instead of 4... and they certainly don't have SoundDiver's compatibility with Logic Audio, nor decent MTC handling. However, I'm open to ANY suggestions! smile.gif At some point, the Unitor8's will just not be a viable option for me anymore... I'm already pushing the edge of what MIDI routers can do. The MIDI standard itself is slow and antiquated... ...but, doing all the kind of work I need to do virtually on computer isn't an option either... computers are still unsatisfactory in the latency department when it comes to recording multiple live MIDI and audio tracks. In any event, if I didn't have so much invested in this setup, I'd sell the whole shebang and get the latest TDM-powered ProTools. Ah well... it works well enough, I guess. Regrardless, I just wanted to say THANKS to the SD forum here... over the years you guys have been invaluable in troubleshooting what could have been a 5-star piece of software if eMagic hadn't of given up on it.
