This should work, if it doesn't it is time to debug the MIDI system. For whatever reason SD is really picky about all the MIDI parameters on Windows and adding a single synth can wreck a seemingly working installation. I had SD once dying on me because I added a larger MIDI matrix that SD doesn't even see. Start the builtin MIDI loopback test and work your way out from the MIDI interface of the computer, through the MIDI Thru's of all your synths and set up the number and size of buffers that you won't get any errors.
