For under $1000 in the general purpose large diaphragm mic category I'd make only 2 considerations based on about a dozen or so mics I've tested in the last year. AT fet 4047 Shure KSM32. (the KSM32 has a different capsule than the other 2 Shure mics in this series. I like it better than those) bd

I know I am going to sound like a crazy man for making this recomdation but in the Large Diaphram Tube Mic Category for under $1000, hell I think it is even under$500, take a look at M-Audio's SPUTNICK. I just used it on a project and was really impressed....

A surprising mic, and not just for what it costs, is the MCA SP-1, $40 US from Pacific Sound & Stage Lighting. Jim Williams of Audio Upgrades mods these, replacing all the electronic parts except for the circuit board, and says once that's done they rival far more costly mics. Even stock, they are usable right out of the box. They use a clone of the Schoeps output circuit, transformerless, which eliminates the unfortunate sound (to me, anyway) of the really bad transformers in so many of the inexpensive LDC's. -- ha

I Love the Shure BETA 58, coz it sounds really nice on so many instruments too, with very little bleed. It's cheap, good for live applications, and good enough for studio projects, on vocal AND instruments. For Strictly studio projects, and strictly vocal, check out SE Electronic SE 2200, Røde K2, and Neumann TLM 103.
