Hello all,
can you recommend me a vocal microphone for £800 maximum.
For use with soft male vocals, and acoustic guitar.
Thanks.

This should open up quite the can of worms! In
that price range are many fine mics, but the only
way to find the "right" one is to try it out on
the sources you'll be recording. The preamp can
make a significant difference as well. LDC's from
Neumann, AKG, Gefell, Shure, Rode, Blue, and
Audio-Technica are all good possibilities. OTOH,
you might do well with one of the cheap Chinese
knockoffs. Try to find a supplier that will let
you try out some mics until you find the best match.

With this budget, I would definitely buy the Oktava MKL 5000. Very
universal, always very nice. The price is cca £800.

MXL 69 V tube condenser, very inexpensive, sounds great, and you
could afford a good mic pre as well.

I would without a doubt buy a Gefell UMT70s. They are normally more
expensive but there´s a german internet shop who has a deal with
Gefell and sell them for around 800 pounds. This mic is a top range mic and
by any standards a contender.
There have been many AB tests with the Neumann U87 Ai and so far noone has
been able to tell them apart. In the US it costs between 2 and 3 thousend
dollars but at the moment it costs around 1200 euros in that internet shop.
I have had one for ages and have been looking a secondhand one for 5 years
or so without luck. Then recently I bought one from that company because if
you´re looking for an allrounder this is it.
PS If you don´t know about Gefell it´s the original Neumann
production place in Dresden that Neumann left because of the political
situation in Germany during the late fifties/early sixties. That´s why
they are allowed to use the same capsules as Neumann (M7).
PPS Look out for the T and S, there´s also an older version called
UM70 which is not as good as this one.
PPPS I have never seen anything bad said about this mic
Rode K2 is my fave in this price range. Nice and un- hyped. Its also
handy because of the multy pattern.

Me neither but I had the link from my purchase and apparently they still
sell at that price. I don't understand how they can sell at that price,
Gefell are shooting the entire high end industry in the foot I think.
Anyway I'm the consumer so it's all positive to me but look out Neumann
because if Gefell can be purchased for prices like this it will be hard to
justify the 3000 dollars that a U87 costs especially in the historic light
where the two are so closely tied together. If a Gefell was $2500 and a
Neumann $3000 I could see the point of buying the Neumann simply because of
the name but at half the price it's just silly.

Worth pointing out that on the UMT70S Thomann
http://www.thomann.de/gb/microtech_gefell_umt70s.htm is €34 cheaper.
(I've no connection with Thomann other than as a very satisfied customer)

Strange when I went in on the link this morning it said 1189 Euros
but now it says 1333,- so you´re right. It´s still cheap though,
and I agree with you Thomann is a nice shop.

Mercenery Audio has these listed for U.S. $1,450
(1,086 Euros). Even with international shipping
(if they do that) it might represent a savings.
Or do duties and other niceties rule this out?

Mercenary does do international shipping (I got my Royer SF-12 from
them for a lot less money than the UK dealers wanted), but you're
correct in assuming that duty and VAT would make it a much more
expensive option in this case (both of the German sites that have been
mentioned were listing prices inc VAT).

You have to add shipping and 20-30 procent of the entire sum which would
bring this one up to almost 2000 dollars. Maybe with this new lower price
tag they will sell more and bring the other high end mics a bit down in
price too. It's still ridiculous that the U87 is twice as expensive as a
UMT70s when they are basically the same and impossible to tell apart
soundwise. I bet if Gefell had chosen to stay with the can look they would
be taken more seriously. Ironically the Gefell have a much better design in
use but they don'´t look like most people expect them to.
PS I love the Gefells so I also love the Neumanns it's just the price
difference I find over the top.

Have you tried the UM900? I keep hearing very good things about it,
but have yet to get an opportunity to try for myself.

Sorry no, I only found out about the UMT70s because I did some backing
vocals in another studio years ago. They had one and I liked it a lot so I
checked it out. I used to do backing vocals more or less as a job so I had
tried all the standard mics by the time my roads crossed with Gefell.
Gefell is a well kept secret and I have never seen any of the other mics
that they produce. I have seen some reviewed and according to those they are
great but no hands on experience.
