Subject: Plug-in and backwards recording question
Message #225407
Hi, I am a new Logic user and I have two questions which are likely overly simplistic, but here it goes... 1. Can you record a backwards track? I am mostly interested in recording a real audio instrument (as opposed to a software instrument) backwards for a solo or effect. Is there a way to manipulate a region in this way in the editor? I have searched the archive of older posts for this one with no luck. 2. Is there an expander plug-in? I don't see one in the menu but maybe they hid it or called it something cute. I often get a noisy mic signal and a noise gate is not subtle enough. Any suggestions?

All you have to do is make a region that delimits the portion that you want reversed, then double click the region to get into the sample editor, then use the Reverse function (Ctrl+R). What I did specifically was record the melody forwards, then learned to play it reversed by playing along with a reversed version. The I reversed the second recording, so the melody would be right, but the sound is of the instrument being played backwards. > 2. Is there an expander plug-in? Hmm.. the book shows one. (Logic Pro 7 plug-in reference, page 42.) David

Shockingly, I can answer this in spite of being new to Logic myself. While you can't record a backward track (at least not in the old analog tape way:-) you can record a track and then reverse it in the audio editor (double click on the recorded region to get there.) You might want to duplicate the region and then do reverse but that's up to you. As far as expanders are concerned, not sure where you were looking but if you go to the Logic area in the Inserts part of the channel strip you will find an Expander there under Dynamic. Thanks guys! I was hoping the backwards function would come up in the editor. As for the Expander, I should have mentioned that I'm using Logic Express. So there is not one in the Dynamic plug-in menu. It sounds like I might just have to try getting rid of mic noise with a combination of eq and a noise gate. Thanks,
