so i admit that i'm new to using the audio features of logic
but there are a few things that are consistently aggravating me:
first in interface:
an example: i had a wonderful 8 measure bassline that was working quite well
for me. until i tried to move it while logic was running. what happened when
i clicked on the piece was that instead of the hand i got the stretch arrow
i guess so it tried to extend the loop instead. why anyone would want to do
this while in mid song unless specifically trying to fix something is beyond
me. in my use 95% of the time that i'm going to click on an audio piece it's
to move it. so anyway now my piece is longer than i need and doesn't loop
correctly. so i should try to fix it, however when i look at it first i find
that there seems to be a four beat space at the front with no audio. so i
say that's wierd and go into the audio window and cut it off. now i go to
the end, but i can't really discern where i should cut it off by the
markings given so i decide to go back to the arrange window and try and
resize it there. however, when i try to resize it to the correct loop i only
have two options moving the mouse from let to right even down at full zoom.
one choice is to little, one choice is too big. niether will loop right. i
believe that what i need to do is adjust the grid size, but i can't quite
figure it out and adjusting all the timing settings on the transport bar
didn't help me at all. so now i am stopped and aggravated and unable to
continue writing music because of something that i consider very stupid
interface problems. even if this is happening for some logical reason, i
can't really see how any of it would be beneficial to the user.... and it's
very aggravating, mostly because there was nothing wrong with it to begin
with. talk about non desctructive...
other things that are adding to my trouble are logics seemingly difficult
time with my computer. sometimes i'll be running every thing ok. sometime
i'll be running two midi tracks and then it slows and slows and crashes all
the insturments at once and then finally gives me the cpu or disk too slow
message. other times i'm using it fine and then suddenly the mouse is
halting here and there and the system is struggling to be used. i have even
recieved a message saying that logic has performed an illegal operation and
i must close the application. and this happened before and after shuting
down logic. when it happened after it was while trying to shut down windows
98 and ended up hanging everything.
thus, i am not a happy logic user. logic is wonderful and i love the
interface, but if it doesn't work then it's useless. it will be nice when it
does.
no i'm not running the best system, but in my opinion this should be way
fast enough or else someone can't code right
PC with Windows 98 first edition with all updates from microsoft
K6III 450mhz
Asus P5A
128mb 100mhz RAM
Maxtor 7200rpm 27Gb EIDE Hd
Event Electronics Darla
Creative Labs Awe 64 Gold (for sampling only)
Generic Roland MPU-401 compatible which is pretty old (for midi)
i'm thinking that perhaps alot of my problems are coming from the MPU-401
card cause it's an old VESA, but it seems to work better than the AWE. maybe
somebody can recommend a good upgrade for me. any other thoughts on how to
get better performance with a product that seems to promise more than it can
handle are very welcome.
thanks and sorry for such a long post
