The Vienna Symphonic Library people have a very handy informational section of their website that details every instrument in an orchestra- tunings, articulations, construction, history, etc... http://www.vsl.co.at/en-us/70/149/48.vsl Might be useful to anyone producing/composing orchestral/classical music electronically, who might have little or no experience with the actual instruments. Could also be useful to sound designers, or musicians looking to accurately spice up a recording with a classical instrument... Eddie IMS ProA/V

Subject: [LUG] Perculator Patch - Ideas, please?
Message #221917
This is a reply to #221851.
Hi, I'm thinking about setting up a perculating sound in Logic, but so far I have not found out how to do it. Has anyone done this and care to share some advice? Background: The functionality I'm after is typically seen in a Yamaha TX81Z as "Performance Mode" or in an Oberheim Matrix 12 as "Rotate Mode". I want to use a bunch of EXS24's and have the Perculator Patch distribute the MIDI note input as "voices" rotated between the EXS24 instances. As a guiding example of what I'm after, here is an associated description regarding the Matrix 12: > Your voices are playing in ROTATION; first voice 1, then voice 2, > and so on, up to voice 6, and then back again to voice 1. This is > the purpose of ROTATE mode. Now, instead of playing one key all the > time, play an ascending scale. As you move from key to key, the > sound still changes for every note. It's really the same thing-each key > triggers the next voice in the rotation. But now, a 3-note chord > might play voices 2,3, and 4; the next 3-note chord would play > voices 5,6, and 1. For what purposes is ROTATE mode good? You have > seen one purpose in the above example: having a different sound > play each time you press a key. This difference can be subtle, too. > Having 6 versions of the same patch, each slightly different, and > then rotating through them, can make your patch seem more natural > or life like. How to do this in Logic? Greetings from Sweden Per Boysen www.boysen.se (Swedish) www.looproom.com (international) http://tinyurl.com/fauvm (podcast) http://www.myspace.com/looproom

"Alternating Split" transformer network: First one feeds two, those two each feed two more. That gets you eight "voice outputs" (two per transformer) to cable to the EXS objects. I'll get dirty with this today :-) I've been using Alternating Split Transformers to build arpeggiators but I never thought abut this way of chaining them (doing this for an Akai EWI performance setup also including Chord Memorizers and Arpeggiators) Greetings from Sweden Per Boysen www.boysen.se (Swedish) www.looproom.com (international) http://tinyurl.com/fauvm (podcast) http://www.myspace.com/looproom

Not trying to be ornery here, John, but wouldn't that screw up the note-offs, i.e. by not sending them to the same outputs that the corresponding note-ons got sent to? Yours wonderingly, Bill

In theory even the first Transformer should be sending incoming events alternatively though output pin 1 and 2. So the two Transformers in the second row should never receive an event each at the same time. However when I tried it out in praxis I stumbled into a stupid error; the alternatively splitting transformers seems to regard a MIDI Not On as one event and a following MIDI Note Off as second event, so it places the splitting cut right between them, resulting in notes beginning exactly as expected - rotating voices and everything - but no notes ever shut up! So, here's the second problem to solve before the percolator will be ready do take on the world... or it will drown in a droone. Also, during the day I have played around with different tunings ("Files/Song Settings/Tunings") and contemplating that with this micro tuning system of Logic I may not need to split chords by this perculation technique. Playing chords sounds so much better in certain micro tunings compared to normal tempered scale. But maybe both things sound the best? :-) Greetings from Sweden Per Boysen www.boysen.se (Swedish) www.looproom.com (international) http://tinyurl.com/fauvm (podcast) http://www.myspace.com/looproom

Good thinking, Bill! I didn't foresee that until I suddenly was chocked by roomful of howling synths, robbed of their note-off's. Stephen's cable-switcher suggestion might be the only way to handle it then. I do remember there's a "hocket" environment example somewhere in Len Sasso's environment toolkit, if you have that? Subject: [LUG] Note Number to Track Select?
Message #222096
This is a reply to #221918.
Hi, I'm working on an environment set-up here and succeeded to map incoming MIDI CC# and Note Numbers to eight track volume faders plus mute buttons. That was easy with the MIDI learn functionality of the Controller Assignment window. But now I want to use some MIDI Note Numbers for "Select Track number x" and I can not find this option among environment objects or in the key command list. Any suggestions? Another thing I'm planning is to route MIDI into Logic to toggle a Cable Switcher Fader between a couple of output pins leading to alternative MIDI plugin builds. Actually most stuff are finished, but I need to get MIDI in there to toggle that switch? Any one got a quick tip? (either using note number or defined values of some CC# - both ways goes fine with my controller hardware) Greetings from Sweden Per Boysen www.boysen.se (Swedish) www.looproom.com (international) http://tinyurl.com/fauvm (podcast) http://www.myspace.com/looproom

Take a look at the Controller Assignments expert window. You may or may not need to be emulating a supported control surface to get "select track X" functionality (I forget). Yes, the Controller Assignment's expert view is my main working space for this. I've been through all available functions there but can't find any "select track X" - just as if I had reached for the mouse pointer and clicked a track in the arrange or a linked mixer channel. Will do a second check tomorrow. Maybe I didn't look though what's available if emulating supported control surfaces? But I'm not sure my controllers here can emulate anything supported because the MIDI events they send out are hardwired... well, maybe I could set up a Transformer for each one to change them into what the "supported device" would have delivered? (oh crap, deadline is approaching... which means I will have to move over this project to Ableton Live instead. Still hoping I can set it up in Logic). Thanks for your help! :-) (I'm learning faster than I produce right now - that's ok but can't go on for a too long period) Greetings from Sweden Per Boysen www.boysen.se (Swedish) www.looproom.com (international) http://tinyurl.com/fauvm (podcast) http://www.myspace.com/looproom
