Subject: New MacBook Pro or Old Universal Audio card
Message #221675
This isn't really a question. It's more of a search for your ideas and comments about this situation. I currently have a MDD G4 Dual 1.25 with MOTU 2408 MK III and a UAD-1 card. I also have a 15 inch Powerbook 1.67 with the MOTU traveller. I would love to get rid of both computers and get a much more powerful new Macbook Pro to replace them since I travel frequently. The problem is that I am addicted to my UAD-1 card. Right now this is the only thing keeping me from going ahead with this. Has anyone else encountered this delimma? Any ideas? -Xavier

As I don't own a UAD card (only fooled around with some on friends' systems), I'm probably not the best person to comment on this, but: As you will gain quite a lot more of native power, have you checked out some (partially CPU hungry) native plugin alternatives? Also, which UAD plugins are you especially using? I think it really shines on the compressor side of things, but even for those there might be some native replacements. Sonalksis and the likes come to mind, plus, from what I know, ti won't be all that long anymore until the (excellent, but Windows only) Kjaerhus plugins will see an OSX port. At least that's what the developer seems to plan. The newer Waves plugins seem to be a fine choice as well, but of course they're rather pricey. The same goes for a Magma extension chassis. I think, for what they offer, they're overpriced. Let alone that, as samonik said already, there might not be models for the new PCMe (or whatever they're called) slots yet. I would in any case check out some demos of whatever native plugins. Most of the serious ones should be available as UBs rather soon as well. - Sascha

Hi Xavier: If there's any way you could postpone making a move on this right now, it might be the best course of action to sit tight for a few weeks. There's currently a lot of chatter on the UAD forums about the possible imminent arrival of a UAD-2, which could be: a) a firewire box like the SSL Duende, b) another PCI card with much more power than the UAD-1, c) an announcement that they've created native versions of their plugs. I'm not sure which of these is most likely, or whether any of them rise to the level of probable, but if you can wait until NAMM in January we should find out whether UA has anything new up their sleeve. And they better. I love my UAD-1 too, but the antiquated processing power it provides is definitely a workflow bottleneck in my dual G5 system. FWIW, I'm transitioning out of using their plugs and into native alternatives (PSP, Eliosound, etc), and I won't be buying any more UA plugs until they do something to increase the power of their tools. Good luck! ~ MB

Pretty simple really. cheers

The MacBook Pro would give you more horsepower than your Tower G4 with 2 x UAD-1 cards, all noding to the PowerBook G4. Of course, you couldn't use UA's plugins, but Waves has very similar versions. f-erenc szabo, smarty pants Z+E+R+O+B+E+A+T "NOW POWERED BY THE MIRACLE OF THE TRANSISTOR!" <http://home.goodmedia.com/~zerobeat>

Thanks guys for all your suggestions. This group is really invaluable! I think that I will probably hold out until after NAMM and see what's available like Mike said. For me paying more than $1000 for a chassis and an interface would put me at a price point where it would make more sense to just buy another desktop too. I can't justify spending that kind of money just for a place to put my PCI cards when for a bit more I can have a place for my PCI cards, a CPU and a bunch of hard drive space that a whole computer would provide. -Xavier
