Gentleman:
The problem has resolved after instruction from MOTU Tech Support
where I instantly reached a live human!! He resolved this common
glitch with MOTU 828 and 896 models. If you start to hear squealing
pops and no sound when playing thru Logic 7.1.1 and possibly higher
and your interface is MOTU 898HD, 896, or 828MkII do the following to
work around the issue:
Open Application: MOTU Audio Setup
Toggle your Optical Input and Output choices back and forth and
return to your original settings.
Logic will now play without the noise WITHOUT RESTARTING!
The issue may happen again. Save the email.
Sincerely,
Steve Kanter

I'm only catching this last email on this topic from the LUG,
but there is more to this problem than MOTU tech support
knows.
MOTU firewire interfaces can have all kinds of hard to diagnose
trouble because of issues with the PCI bus, especially on the
G5. Symptoms include popping, loss of sync, static, that evil
squeeeel from hell, and constant resyncing.
MOTU will tell you to "toggle the options", reset the unit, and
send it in for repairs, in that order. That's the extent of what
MOTU tech support can do. They're helpful and responsive, in my
experience, just not well supported internally.
Watch your console logs when you get errors and see what kind of
messages show up. Scrounge the web forums for that error message.
The firewire interfaces have a long, but very quiet, history of
issues with the PCI bus not playing nice. While they may seem
completely unrelated they cause all of the above symptoms.
So try this: pull or even just rearrange your PCI cards and see
if this doesn't fix the problems. It's a pain, I agree, but worth
the trial. It worked for me and for a few others who had long
standing MOTU fw trouble.
Good luck.

I've had the "static" problem: distorted audio from the G5/828II
firewire combination off
and on. I have found that toggling the audio I/O from MOTU to internal and
back in the
Logic audio driver dialog seems to work without restarting the 828 or Logic.
Sometimes it
takes more than once.
I'm not sure, but this may have started with the introduction of a Universal
Audio UAD-1
PCI card. I can't live without it, but I can move it. The UAD-1 has known
issues with the
PCI bus controller IC in the dual 1.8GHz G5 but that supposedly just limits
the number of
UA plug-ins that will operate.
