Hi
I have a MBP 2.16 with 2Ghz RAM and an M-Audio Projectmix. I recently
upgraded to OSX 10.4.8, to Logic 7.2.3, to Quicktime 7.1.3 and I have the
latest driver for the Projectmix. I am now encountering problems with system
overload and video sync in logic while using only a small volume of project
content.
I have hardly any audio files in the project (three tracks, no plug-ins) and
am scoring a 1Gb quicktime file. Logic keeps freezing with core audio error
message: 'disk is too slow or system overload' – absurd given the computer
spec and the number of assets.
I shouldn't have to run the video externally but have tried to no avail.
There is also a problem with video sync. Although I have contiguous sync
activated, the project doesn't play back consistent sync and there seems to
be an occasional Wowing of the Video (not audio). Given a tight deadline, I
thought I'd try doing the project in Live 6 but that seemed to have the same
problem with the video, suggesting an issue with either OS X or Quicktime.
This doesn't answer the question about core audio system overload in Logic
though.
I had no problems scoring longer films with loads of audio and plug-ins
prior to upgrading all the software. I tried a soft reinstall of OS X to use
an earlier version of Quicktime but this didn't work.
Has anyone had similar problems? Any help greatly appreciated...

I always turn contiguous sync off. It puts a HUGE hit on the CPU
(which could explain some of your problems), and I've never had a
sync problem with it turned off.

Thanks Fred
I've tried various permutations of sync settings, including having
contiguous sync off, but the software still struggles. I've never used the
contiguous sync facility before this project either and the computer was
always fine running video on all default settings... if all else fails I'll
clean reinstall the OS, backdate each bit of software concerned and test
selective re-updating of each one. In the mean time I'll try and meet my
deadline for this project by minimising assets and turning CS off, as you
suggest. If it's CPU hungry I'm sure it's not helping matters.
Cheers
Jem
