As for drives, I've always had good performance from Segate. The 7200 RPM, 8MB cache ones are fine. I never use bigger than 250 GB because it's more useful to have multiple smaller drives than less bigger ones. Both external firewire and internal SATA drives are the same devices. You'll get better performance from them on the internal SATA bus than external FW. That's about it...
