Subject: [LUG] Workflow advice needed from composers/songwriters
Message #220679
This is a topic I am very much interested in. I have spent years trying to come up with the best organized solution for scoring pictures in conjunction with using Logic. I have been only partially successful in coming up with any ideas that make scoring fast and simplified. But... one thing that always eludes me and I have tried many types of ideas here is the naming of files for quick access and understanding even if it means I will have to access those files months and sometimes years down the line. I think one of the cooler music tech type magazines had a quick blog in it where one of the editor/contributors was wondering if some people would write in and let him know how THEY name files to projects. I have tried everything from scene description to shot bookends to SMPTE time code numbers and these experiences have always resulted in only partial success. I REALLY wish (and I've wished this from day one of Logic) that there would be a very detailed notepad attached somehow. Perhaps a notepad that didn't have to be accessed through the song itself? I have basically resorted to making detailed "Readme" files that go into each song folder and usually break down every movie into REEL subcategories. These README files contain ALL sorts of information. Even emotional thoughts on a track or producers comments or the time of day the piece is written. Its great thing to really jog the memory especially when lots of time has passed. I have determined that the best way is to try and get an entire scene of a film into ONE song if possible. It takes a lot of discipline and planning but if thought out it CAN be done. The process of scoring a film can be wrought with difficulties and complexities and can go on for many weeks. With many changes... Coming up with the ultimate Logic Template to allow ONE song to work for each scene is daunting but possible. The use of FOLDERS is absolutely essential in doing this so anyone looking to organize a song should definitely start there. Takes a littel getting used to but is well worth the effort. In the meantime-if anyone has any thoughts on NAMING projects for films/television work - please share! :) -Terry michael huud _www.Music4TheMovies.com_ (http://www.Music4TheMovies.com)

In OSX at least (I can't remember if it was this way in classic) doesn't every file have that? Do a get info on a file and there should be a little place for "comments." In Tiger, that's now the "spotlight comments" field, which just makes it searchable via spotlight. I've never used the comments for anything, but they're there. Dru
