this past week in NYC, we had a logic users group meeting, and i was
speaking with a gent
who told me that he gets better performance storing his samples (exs,
kontact, stylus, etc)
on his main drive and then he tracks audio to an external FW drive...
my present set up is:
dual g5 (MH aduio interface)
1-main internal drive
1-additional internal drive
3-external fire wire drives
i also have an additional pci card which gives me an additional 2 usb &
2 FW ports...
where is the best place to store samples and recording audio? is it best
like the example
this gent uses with his macbook pro? i've always used external FW drives
for samples and
the 2nd internal drive to track audio...
any advice would be grateful-- as well as advice on a solid FW drive to
add... i have 2
mercury elite drives getting ready to go south-- and the one glyph drive
continues to
perform really well...
anyone?
peace

The principals involved in HD management are pretty straightforward.
Audio tracks require HD's to work some, the more tracks the more the
HD has to work. Streaming sample based instruments (EXS, VSL, BFD,
Ivory etc..) also require HD/s to work a lot - so it's not rocket
science that it makes good sense to put your audio playback/ record
tracks on one drive and your streaming instruments on another.
Popular wisdom suggests that we don't use our internal system drive
for any of these activities. Mainly because we don't want to add wear
and tear to that drive since it has to run so much anyway. Once Logic
has booted up it rarely needs to look at this drive during normal
operation. Some people use it to stream audio from even without
realising it. If you let Logic install it's Apple Loops and Factory
EXS libraries in their default locations this is the drive they live
on - thus when you use those audio types this system drive will be
doing some streaming.
If you're like me I run several large streaming Instruments, EXS,
VSL, BFD and Ivory. In addition to this my work tends to have a fire
few audio tracks as well so I have a second internal drive purely for
that. I try to keep all my sample libraries on one external Firewire
400 drive - mainly so I can take it with me to other studios. Problem
is if I have a typical rock drum track coming from BFD and I want to
have an Ivory piano part in the same tune this drive starts to
struggle. For this reason I put my Ivory samples on my internal
system drive. It does work well doing this but idealy it would live
on another external drive but I don't have a spare - but I will have
soon - for safety's sake.
As for drives, I've always had good performance from Segate. The 7200
RPM, 8MB cache ones are fine. I never use bigger than 250 GB because
it's more useful to have multiple smaller drives than less bigger
ones. Both external firewire and internal SATA drives are the same
devices. You'll get better performance from them on the internal SATA
bus than external FW.
That's about it...
Kind regards

USB an FW disk are very good for backup
The dream system is :
- one partition for system and Apps
- one partition for MAC OS X VM
- one raid 1 or 5 of Sata disks for audio streaming
- one raid 0 of Sata disks for samples
- a backup of your samples lib on a FW or a removable SATA disk
- a clone of you system on a FW or USB disk

I cannot tell you what to do, but I can share my set up.
I have two internal 750G drives in the following partitions:
Drive 1:
P1 Working System
P2 Test Sysem
P3 Backup (hopefully for future use with 'time machine'
Drive 2:
P1 Samples
P2 Plugins
P3 Audio
Now depending on the project will change how I work. The internal
drives seem to perform better than external, however if I am relying
on audio AND samples a lot, it's going to put a big load on the
machine because it's getting everything from one drive. So I often
use an external FW for audio since it's unlikely I will run out of
track count and then the samples/Plugins can stream from a separate
drive. A lot of times though I am just using one or the other. if I
could I would have 3 internal drives, but my computer only has 2
bays. but more ultimately I would like a separate 3rd internal drive
for Audio.
i think what you are doing is fine, it's more so an issue of separate
drives for samples and audio than it is for which one uses which. If
you have been having good luck with Glyph drives, then i would stick
with them. Personally I find they cost more just so they can put
fancy designs on them. But they work fine in my experience.
