No kidding! Sorry for the bad advice, and thanks for the tip. I have
a Sonnet eSATA 4+4 card in my main G5.
From their site:
Problem:
After installing a WD4000YR, WD4000KD, WD360ADFD, WD7400ADFD,
WD1500AHFD, or WD1500ADFD, the computer system will hang (lock up),
necessitating a system re-boot.
Cause:
The Apple G5 tower does not support certain standard Serial ATA
interface protocols used by the WD4000YR, WD4000KD, WD360ADFD,
WD7400ADFD, WD1500AHFD, and WD1500ADFD hard drives resulting in an
interface lock-up. This causes the computer system to hang.
Resolution:
The only work-around we have identified at this time is installing a
SATA Host Bus Adapter (controller card), effectively circumventing
the on-board interface.

i am not blaming anyone excpet for Wwstern digital, as I have
seen many many peopl recommend it, an it is calledd 'the most
reliable SATA' drive by Macworld magazine! I do lotsd of research
when buying anything and I missed this tiny article that Western
Digital have hidden on their site.
I would like to know how many other missed it too, because it was
discoverd AFTER many peopl bought the drive. It was not known
previously, so I think Western Digital should have a partial recal
for mac users, but they will not even give me a refund!! I am sure
that my UK statuatory rights cover me on this 'not fit for purpose'
issue, but I can't be bothered wasting anymore time with them.
Anyone want to buy a 150gb Raptor drive (for your PC obviously)???

I wonder if there's any chance of Apple updating the G5 SATA
firmware in a future update to support those certain standard
SATA protocols? I sure get sick of scheduling people to flash
Dell BIOS and RAID BIOS updates at work, though I guess Software
Update would make it pretty easy anyway. ;-)

Not sure Western Digital can be faulted if the problem rests
with the G5 SATA interface.

I assume that thay have to blame Apple, as otherwise they would be admitting
legal
responsibility for the fault. How many revisions of the G5 have there been
vs. how many
revisions of this drive?
I am inclined to think neither is faulty. It is just that Western Digital
did not test
thoroughly. they should have tested thoroughly on the g5. The G5 came first
and was well
established before the raptor was released. Had they done so, they should
have put a note
on their product inof saying, ' not compatible with G5.' they did not do
this, and they still
have not done it.
Mac experts everywhere think this drive is compatible with G5s. it is rated
in every Mac
magazine and in numerous benchmark tests. It is WD's fault for hiding the
information.
They are under no obligation to make something compatible with the G5, but
they are
obliged to reveal know compatibility issues, and they should state them
clearly and in full
public view.

Chris
