Hey all,
Can any one suggest a PCI Firewire 800 card for
our 2X2 G5. Just tried connecting an external
500GB LaCie FW800 drive at the same time as a Yamaha
i88x and it is a total no go. So looking for a PCI card
to drive the FW800 drive.
Running Logic 7.2 if it makes any difference.
Thanks for any help.

I'm on 7.2.1 and recently bought one from OWC for $50.
Works great:

James and Phil.
Thanks for the recommendation - and the NON recommendation.
They are all so inexpensive, it is nice to know what works well and
what does not.

tt may be the LaCie. I had to replace both of mine after they were
found to be a problem with several firewire devices.

I like my i88x as well. The only negative is the amount of cpu the
driver uses.
Sounds good, has lots of I/O (8 analog, 8 adat, 2 spdif) and I
haven't had any issues with mine.

JP - or anyone who can answer.
I just received the above FW800 card. Directions are
basically non existent for installation. The puzzling
item is the separate power cable ???? Why does it
need it - and how does it get hooked up??
This is for the original 2X2.0 G5.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Dave,
For installation, just slot it into a free PCI slot and boot
the computer, it should just work, no drivers needed as it is
all dealt with within the OS. The power adaptor is if you need
bus power (ie the firewire cable carries a current to power
some external devices.)
Hope this helps, Mike

Mike,
Thanks - helps a lot. The nice folks at OWC also just
emailed me with the same info.

I too am on the orig G5 and the provided extra cable
is not needed by us. FWIW, OWC has pretty good phone
support. You may have to wait a few minutes but you
eventually get someone who will help you sort it out.
