Subject: TC Electronics 24d--New Metric Halo?

OK, maybe poor man's Halo--but the question is. .. Given TC's experience with plugin EQ, Comp, verbs,. . .and their parnership with ADK on the converters. . . {OK the single instances of the FX are a compromise (but you can set these up as inserts)--} has technology caught up with MH such that, for a one-person operation (songwriting etc), a 24d is going to be competitive with a ULN2 with its DSP? FWIW, TC has not done a good job marketing the Konnekts. No reviews to date, yet . . .how long has this thing been announced? So what can we rely on--TC's WEBSITE?????? Go ahead and look. They claim "the VERY BEST sound." This thing is like $500. Is there anyone out there who is familiar with topnotch pres and converters AND who has a Konnekt?

TC are good with dsp (development and plugins) but i'd find it difficult to believe that they can compete with the quality of the ULN preamps AD/DA for half the price. Already the ULN kicks the a** of stand-alone preamps AD/DAs at several time the price. But if i'm wrong, I'll have no problems eating my words (whether they be 16, 24 or possibly 32 bit ;-)) Mike

there's a very favourable review of the 24d in this month's keyboard magazine about the 24d. the only downside i see are the limited (4) TRS outputs. it has adat though and you can daisy chain them...maybe $500 for 4 (apparently really nice) onboard inputs / 4 outputs isn't so cheap...

I own a konnekt. it sounds great but there are problems on certain iMac G5s in terms of having other firewire devices connected. here's my experience: After nearly 3 months of struggle with the konnekt and TC Near software, I was informed by TC Denmark that the only way to use the product smoothly on a iMac G5 2.1 Gh with isight is NOT to have any additional firwire device connected to the computer besides the konnekt itself, which means you can only use an internal drive for all recording and audiio instrument playback. Considering that recording to a drive other than one's system drive is highly recommended, there is also the problem of the space issue on an internal drive. so this is highly inconvenient. TC went as far as agreeing that I should return the unit to my retailer and they would work it out even though it's 3 months old. Wow! That means it is really an incurable problem. Symptoms: the use of the Near control panel causes itself to crash and Logic no longer recognizes the interface as a Core Audio option. The slightest gesture on the control panel causes crash and freezing when an external firewire device is connected in any way to the computer [daisy chained or directly], so the whole purpose of having a control panel that allows for direct monitoring is defeated. I'm wondering if anyone else with an iMAc G5 or Macbook [or any other model for that matter] has had these difficulties. This would verify that it is specifically an iMac G5 firewire issue. Does anyone out there know if I will have the SAME PROBLEMS WITH OTHER MANUFACTURER'S audio interfaces such as MOTU, RME, PRESONUS?? I would hate to return this thing to find that my particular computer's firewire bus is too weak to support these other brands. I don't necessarily need bus power if there is an external AC (TC supplies one). But I do have to know that I can use an external firewire device in addition to the audio interface. Any opinions or experieces would be of great help. Thanks

YMMV > > Dave Shirk > Pamlico Sounds Just fot the sake of conversation....... With my IMac G5 1,8 GHz, I use MetricHalo ULN2+DSP on the first FW port and on the second there is three (3) FW HDs connected, and everything working flawlessly (knock, knock, knock - it's me to knocking on the wood). For my live/DJ set up - I use PowerBook G4 667 DVI and MH ULN2 daisy chained with 2 FW HDs on the same bus-on the PCMCIA FW card. So, that statement where is the Konnekt (with all that fuss regarding firewire problems) being the new Metric Halo - i think is, simply put, wrong. my 0,02 cents _______________________ Sven Delaè Kreativni obrt "SVE NAJ" zvuk - glazba - glas Maksimirska 107 10000 Zagreb, Hrvatska tel: ++ 385 (0)98 90 44 329 fax: ++ 385 (0)1 23 18 503 sven.delac@zg.htnet.hr

An Apple Tech has confessed to me that after the G4s and somewhere during the G5s, they stopped manufacturing firewire buses that EXCEEDED the standard firewire specs, and made them to MEET the standard instead with later G5s and intels. This explains why your G4 and possibly your G5 at 1.8Ghz can run all that firewire stuff at once, whereas my imac G5 2.1Ghz w isight (last model imac G5 they made) and Dave's dual G5 with the Yamaha firewire interface has trouble handling the multi-device thing. Based on this, I'm not so sure it is Metric Halo's superiority to TC konnekt but rather a comparison between Apple's firewire bus capabilities between their later and earlier models with firewire.

Hi there: It has been a while since you posted your lines regarding your Konnekt interface. Have you been able to solve your problem? i am having cramps with my Konnekt8 Interface since the day i bought it two months ago. Like you, I am using it with a brand new G5 I-Mac, and i have to deal with some weird behavior of that thing: firewire problems, unable to control the volume nobs on the device, only one speaker/headphone working... i haven't connected my computer to other firewire devices, so that cant be the problem. in the beginning, i could solve the madness by simply reloading the TC Near software, but now, this doesnt help anymore. Basially: it sucks big time. i will try to bring it back to the stroe wher i bought it and get something else... any ideas? > risraelfrontiernet.net Fred Israel <frisrael@frontiernet.net> wrote: > risraelfrontiernet.net Thanks! I assume you'd be on the latest driver from TC 1.22... 1. How does it work with logic 7.2.3? 2. How does it work with 10.4.10 3. How does it work with ppc computers? 4. How does it work with intel macs? thanx -michael
