Can I upgrade from 4.7 to 5.5 or do I need an upgrade in between.

Version 5 is an entirely new version, so you should be able to install 5.5.1
straight away, as long as your dongle is the proper one. Emagic changed the
dongle when version 5 was introduced.

Apple no longer offer any upgrades from Versions of logic older than 5. The
upgrades
available are only to Logic 7. Logic 5 was replaced by Logic 6 over three
years ago, and Apple
stopped selling windows versions of logic around 4 years ago.
kind regards

Oh well, sure - I sort of missed the "upgrade" issue.
But you can still get 5.5.1/PC compatible dongles on eBay and recently I've
seen a left-over PC-package in a shop as well, but it's already been
pre-sold. No idea whether shops (in case they do have such a package) would
actually let you upgrade or rather charge the full price. Guess the latter
is much more likely since the update to LogicPro is rather affordable once
you got version 5.

I have the 5.5 upgrade but I don't know if it will work with the 4.7
version.

I think you need the version 5 upgrade first, which is no longer
available from retailers. You had to send in the old dongle. Probably
you need to buy the full version 5 which you can often get on ebay (but
make sure it has the proper dongle). You should then be able to update
to your 5.5

Incidentally, has anyone had the experience of updating from 5 to 7 and
then using the updated dongle with their Logic 5 installation? I ask
because I want to do just that, but Apple is not very supportive in
providing feedback as to whether the newly updated dongle will activate
the instruments in the Logic 5 installation. It makes sense that it
would, but I'm just trying to be sure before I take the plunge. I do
intend to migrate to MAC, but I would still want to maintain the dual
installations.

I recently updated my dongle, but I already had all the instruments
activated before, so I can't tell. But my guess would be that they won't
update any of the dongle's Windows functionality, so it'll just work like
before.

Hey Dandi.
I have just updated from [LAW] 5.5.1 to OSX Mac Pro 7.2 with the same
XS key with no problem whatsoever.
However, I will say this - Back at the time when Logic 6 was released,
I purchased that upgrade
even though it did not work with Windows.
The reason for that is because someone on the LUG discovered that if
you purchased Logic 6 and you
loaded it onto a Mac and updated your XS key on that same Mac, you
could use the key in WinXP and it would
unlock the EXS24, the EVP 88, the B3, the Clavi, ES1, ES2 etc. which it
did on my pc.
It did not give you access to Spacedesigner and a couple of other
things that I cannot remember right now.
So my point is, I think that what happened for me is that because I had
updated it to Logic 6 on a mac, maybe that's the reason
I had no problems updating to 7.2.
I hope some of this helps.
Best of luck,
Danny B.

Hey thanks Danny, that is helpful. It stands to reason that if the Logic 6
update (on MAC) had the effect of activating those instruments on you pc
installation, the same would likely be true with the Logic 7 update. It's
worth taking the chance for $299.
Thanks,
Dandi

Actually, it doesn't stand to reason. AFAIK, updating directly from logic 5
to logic pro 7 will NOT allow you to use those instruments in Logic 5 Which
became part of logic pro. As Danilo mentioned in his mail, he had already
added Logic 6 which did give you this windows authorisation.
Be careful, you may be dissapointed.

Sorry, I meant to say I just want to activate those that already exist in
Logic 5--those of EXS24, EVoc, ES1, and ES2. I agree....I wouldn't expect
instruments that were newly released with Logic 6 and Logic 7 to be
available in Logic 5. Thanks again....

Those are the ones I was referring to.
Just to spell it out - A user of LAW was able to buy Logic Pro 6,
get it autohorised on his XSkey, and use these plugins in LAWP 5.5.1:
ES1, ES2, Evoc, EVP 88, EVB 3, EXS 24, EVD 6
Obviously, the plugins that came after Logic 5.x, notably
Space Designer in Logic 6, and Sculpture and Ultrabeat in Logic Pro 7,
would not work with 5 anyway.
What I am saying is, if you have Logic 5 Windows and buy the
Logic pro 7 upgrade, it will NOT give you authorisations of the
Logic 5 instruments I listed.
Logic Pro 6 did this, Logic Pro 7 does not.
Hope that is clear
kind regards
Mark Cahill
There was a radical change in the programming of the Key from
Version 5 to 6 (blue key) and some additions to Logic 7
(for Spacedesigner, Sculpture, Ultrabeat and Guitaramp a.s.o.)
which weren´t available before, if I remember right.

Wow, that truly is disappointing. Hey Mark, thanks for spelling it out for
me. I'll know what to expect. Looks like time for the migration anyway....

Danny,
I'm wondering about the distinction between something called the 5 to 6
upgrade (includes dongle) and the straight purchase of Logic Pro 6. Do you
think I would get the same result that you got with either of these
products? Incidentally, one commentor said that prior to Logic Pro 7, there
was no such thing as Logic Pro 6, as any version prior to 7 was to be known
only as Silver, Gold, or Platinum. I don't believe that's correct, however.
I believe I've seen Logic 6 Platinum as well as Logic Pro 6. My hope is
that either of these will address my needs. An acquaintance is selling her
Logic Pro 6, and I'm wondering if this would do it for me.
I'm very appreciative of all prior advice and any you might have further.
Thanks, Dandi
