I have an audio instrument that I have automated the mute through out a
song. I wanted to change the muting so I edited the muting visually on
the track suing the pointer.
Upon playback the old muting timing was used even though visually I was
watching the automation muting line showing a different timing of the
muting.
So I tried writing over the tracks automation by setting the audio
instruments channel to 'write' automation mode. Even in write mode it
switched back as if the old muting data was still there.
I can watch the mute button turn on and off on the arrange page channel
strip of this instrument so I know it is being muted.
This has to be a bug. Automation data being ignored in favour of old
deleted data. Write mode not writing over every thing and actually
reading this invisible data when it is in write mode.
If this is pilot error I would love to know the explanation. I have
enough in life saving for music equipment, learning to use it and then
maybe getting my personal inspiration down to have to deal with Logic
not doing what it is supposed to.

I¹m not sure what is happening, but did you try using the ³erase
automation² command? That usually works when there is some gremlin
hiding on
the track...you can erase all automation or currently visible automation.
Maybe you know this and prefer not to do it....Logic should respond to what
you say you are doing, but sometimes things do get messed up in ways that
are not at all obvious.

Yes I used the 'delete all currently visible' function. After that
didn't work I tried the 'delete all automation of current track'. Still
didn't work.

How about moving the region(s) to another track?

Ok, check that:
There aren't any other tracks using the same Audio object with mute
automation on them (in theory this shouldn't be possible as the
automation is global, but...), and/or
There aren't any CC9/Fader 9 events on that track (or others using the
same Audio object), or CC9/Fader 9 events arriving via environment cable.
If neither of those apply, open the automation event list (keycommand
only), then open a new Arrange window - you'll be in the "hidden"
automation folder. Check there aren't any stray automation regions on
that track, and that there aren't duplicates of that track.
If that still doesn't work, it may be a screwed-up song, possibly as a
result of bringing an old song or autoload into Logic 7.
