Subject: [LUG] audio interface advise....
Message #219312
i'd like to know what kind of audio interface i should buy to use with logic. because i'd like to record into logic. what is the least expensive audio interface? i'd also like to know what kind of midi interface i should buy to use with logic? or is there such thing as audio/midi interface in one? I have a G4 733 DA and running os x 10.4.7 and now there is the update which is 10.4.8 that i haven't downloaded yet. i have logic express 7.2. cheers, djevon

The cheapest audio interface is the built-in interface of the Mac. Just plug your line source in. It doesn't offer superior quality of course. Next one: if you have a usual microphone you cannot connect it directly to the Mac. You can still stay on the cheap side if you buy one of these small mixers with mic preamps (Behringer's for example) and plug it into the Mac. The mixers are available for around $100. Audio interfaces below $100 are available but you might only get one input and output. Expect at least $250 for a reasonable device. M- Audio, Edirol, Behringer, for example. Audio interfaces with really good sound start around $500, todays "standards" for studios are beyond the $1000 mark. > i'd also like to know what kind > of midi interface i should buy to use with logic? or is there such > thing as audio/midi interface in one? Most audio interfaces above $250 have MIDI on board. If you think about a small keyboard for soft synths either, something like the M-Audio Ozone might be interesting. 25 keys, few knobs, audio and MIDI for $300. I don't know about the audio quality. --- Please check the actual prices yourself, I just scanned my usual dealer websites where most prices are in Euro. ___ Peter Ostry

I know because two weeks ago I purchased one on E-bay. :-) It actually does list the CD as an input source. Last week I purchased an RME PST interface for a $100 on EBay and it's working very nicely in this machine. For djevon.. all of the adice you've received is good but you will need an audio interface, preferably one with MIDI. Tascam makes some reliable USB interfaces plus there are several inexpensive ($250 or less) Firewire interfaces with MIDI out there. Peter, if you're still reading, I have a couple of questions about OSX that I'd like to ask. None of them would take more than a sentence to answer, would you be up for it if I sent you private mail? Howard
