Subject: [LUG] Roland XV-5080 Expansion Slots E-F
Message #219293
Dear Logic Users, I've successfully been able to address the SRX slots A-D on the Roland XV-5080 by using Logic's Bank Select messages. However, I'm really struggling to do the same with slots E-H. Does anyone know how to the resolve this problem. Your kind help would be much appreciated. Don't Roland have a system where each expansion card (NB: card, not slot) requires specific bank change messages? If so, you might need to use Custom Bank change message and set 'em up according to the directions in the so-called manual that comes with each expansion card. And (jeez, sorry to be so vague this morning - I think my brain's still sitting on the pillow) isn't Logic limited to 14 or 15 different banks in its MIDI instruments? The XV's Internal bank and the preset banks use up 9 of them, and (at least some of) the cards in slots A to D use a couple of banks each. So you might need to use 2 multi-instruments, each with custom bank change messages, to access all of the XV's sounds with bank select messages. (I've been using the thing in Performance mode for so many years I can't remember much about this bank select stuff, so I'm sorry if I've given you a bum steer...) Cheers, Bill (Ummm, I *think* that's my name...)

Yes, MSB is 93 for all SRX Expansion boards, and the LSB numbers can be found on the patch list that comes with each card--these documents are all available at: rolandus.com/ mojo/manuals.aspx (if you have misplaced them). For instance you use LSB 7 to access patches 001-128 on the orchestra card, LSB 8 for patches 129-256, etc. Hope this helps you if you didn't already figure it out.

Hello Linda, Thanks for taking the time out to kindly reply to my email. The Roland XV-5080 does require bank changes etc. but as you rightly wrote, the relevant custom messages will be required. Do you have an working template you can send me for further investigation as custom messages commands etc. is all very new to me. Do you personally own this machine and have you been able to access expansion slots E-H? Out of interest, which country are you emailing me from? Once again, thanks for your unselfish help and guidance. I look forward to hearing from you soon. Regards, Whyman Baker (London ~ England)

It's only slots E-F that I'm really struggling with. In Logic, I worked out that I will need to use a second "Multi Instrument" as the software currently only provides 14 bank select slots per "Multi Instrument". It's getting the right commands via custom messages I'm really having a headache with. I've never messed around with custom messages before and haven't got a clue where to start. You kind assistance would be much appreciated. Many thanks, Whyman (London ~ England) Ps Which country are you based???!!

I've just dug out my "SRX-04 Symphonique Strings" manual and found on page 6, Patch List (1), at the top left of the list: "Bank Select MSB: 93; LSB: 3". There's also some relevant stuff on p.21 of the XV manual. (MSB is CC00, LSB is CC32, in case you didn't know.) So, you'll need to check out the manuals for your SRX expansion cards. As also mentioned by Linda, the manuals are available at http://www.rolandus.com/mojo/manuals.aspx > I've never messed around with custom messages before > and haven't got a clue where to start. You kind > assistance would be much appreciated. It's pretty easy - like creating a list of controllers in an Event List editor. Full details are on page 218 of the Logic Reference manual. BTW, it seems that Logic can have up to 63 Custom Bank messages per multi-instrument. The 14-bank limit applies only to names of patches. > Ps Which country are you based???!! Australia. About as far away from you as I could possibly get without leaving the planet. Not deliberately, of course! :-) Cheers, Bill
