Usenet groups are fine for people who have lots of time to spare, and for whom online time is cheap. Email lists are better for almost everyone else - but for a list with this amount of traffic it's pretty much essential to have a mailer which can filter incoming mail directly to "folders" or "collections". Personally, I use Eudora Light, and set it up to send mailing-list emails direct to a "collection" for that list. So I've got a LUG mailbox, a C**ase-users mailbox, a Pulsar mailbox, et cetera. Makes things much more manageable - I only have to pay attention to list messages when there's something important going on, or I have some spare time, but when I need to look something up, it's all there and archived. Much less hassle than Usenet servers or Web forums!
