Subject: [LUG] Export Audio To Movie - My Audio Is Out Of Sync!
Message #216977
I'm am currently running Logic 7.1.1 under MacOSX 10.4.5. Here's the scenario: I'm working with a long video file which only requires music during one portion. I usually default my sessions to start at 01:00:00;00 and naturally when you import the video, it too, begins at 01:00:00;00. Instead of fast forwarding and starting my work at bar 152 (for example) I like to change the session start time to a point further into the film. For example, if I go into the Synchronization menu and change Logic's session start to 01:10:00;00, bar 1 of my song now begins at this time address. The movie is still being told to start playing at 01:00:00;00, so in effect I have skipped over ten minutes of uneeded film and brought bar 1 to a more convenient location in the movie. When I finish my work and use the "Export Audio To Movie" command Logic bounces the entire film and makes a new Quicktime file on the hard drive. When I open this new Quicktime file and watch it, my music is completely out of sync with picture. Upon watching the final Quicktime bounce from Logic, my music starts to play about 30 seconds into the beginning of the film, a good 9 and a half minutes earlier than it's supposed to. You're probably thinking that if my music started a bit after bar 1 in the Logic session, in essence creating a gap of silence at the head of my session, then what must be occuring is that Logic is bouncing my music from bar 1 and placing this new audio file at the beginning of the final movie. Well, the gap of silence from bar 1 to the start of my music inside the Logic session and the gap of silence from the start of the final Quicktime bounce to where my music cuts in do not match. There is about a 30 second gap in the final Quicktime file from the beginning to where my music starts playing (And in the wrong location mind you), and only about a 6 second gap from the start of my Logic session (Bar 1) to where my music comes in (Around bar 4 of the arrange page). The only fix I've found is to not offset the session start time as I have been doing, instead choosing to fast forward to bar 152 and start working from that point onwards. In this instance, Logic will bounce the movie and my music in sync. Has anyone else experienced this? This has to be bug, as I can't find any reason that this sync error could be occurring. -Mike Ayotte

I can't explain why Logic doesn't just mix to the section of video you're working with - or - why the difference between the music start and film start isn't consistent with the difference between music start and song start... but i can suggest s "work around". Buy QuickTime Pro for $30 Copy and paste your movie into a new QT window. Trim the new movie to start (and end) just where you need for the cue. Save the movie using "dependancies" (this is why you use QTPro, "dependent" files save time and disk space) Use the new movie in your session. no offset should be necessary - so no nasty surprises when you bounce to movie.
