I'm curious as to the ease of use and the ability to change patches quickly
(from a capable
controller) in a live situation. I'd be interested in using all the vintage
instruments, the EXS
smpler, ES2 and perhaps a plug in like Ivory for piano.
My scenario would probably involved needing to access 20-30
"patches" which could be
single intruments or a layer or split.
I'm not currently a Logic user so I'm not looking for great detail as to how
this would be
done, but rather in finding out if it is doable and would provide fast real
time unctionality. I
realize a fair amount of time would need to be spent in the initial
configuration.
thanks much

Responding to program changes in pretty much real time is there now
for all but the sampler (EXS) as this takes a bit of time to load the
required samples - but for these instruments you can have them
already loaded on different virtual instrument instances ready to
play, and get Logic's cable switcher to do the work for you here. So
in general I reckon Logic's "Live synth rack" potential is pretty
good.
PS: To get some of this latest functionality you'll need to be
running Logic 7.2 or later

I'm using Logic 7.2 live all the time now. You can assign any controlstrip
plugins to the
standard midi patch numbers 0-127. The trick, at least for exs24 plugins, is
to preload the
plugin sample on another track. This eliminates it reloading everytime you
call up that
particular program that uses the sampler. Also be careful with over using
polyphony on
the evp88 plugin, 16 voices should be enough. I also trimmed the tonewheels
on my evb3.
This is because of my powerbook. Its a G4 1.25 with 1 gig of ram. I
installed a 100 Gig
7200 hard drive. It does the job. I leave my Triton Studio Pro at home now.

Hey Paul,
There isn't any way to keep the instruments loaded into the
EXS while switching between songs in Logic, right? I'm using it live
and the wait for the instruments to load can be agonizing. I have a
song set up with all the instruments I regularly use loaded in and
that works great until I need to load up another song to play.
Thanks.

There is a preference somewhere.... Maybe EXS Options panel, that
says something like "Keep same instruments in memory when changing
songs". If you search the manual with something like "same
instrument" you'll find it I'm sure...

Oh yeah? Wow! It didn't even occur to me to look for the
option. I assumed EXS had to load up as each song loaded.
Thanks a million! I'll dig into the manual tomorrow.

My trick is to preload EXS samples that have been saved as performances in
another track
further down on my arrangement. That way when I call them up on another
track for my
splits or layers, whatever, they are already preloaded. Third party samplers
won't do this in
Logic, at least Kontakt won't.

Hi Paul,
I had a minute to mess with this tonight. I found a pref
"keep common samples in memory when switching songs" on the EXS
Instrument Editor page. That helps if I happen to be going to a song
that uses some of the same samples as the last song. Certainly a
step in the right direction but not the panacea I was hoping for. :-(
The trick you talk about above only works while you are
working in the same song, right? I do that with my general
performance song that loads up the samples I routinely use. The
delay occurs when EXS loads up samples after I change songs. I don't
see a way around that problem unless I'm misunderstanding the concept.
What I'd like to have is the ability to load the samples into
EXS for the night and keep 'em there. Thus avoiding the delay while
the samples for each song load. I guess that's not possible in a
soft sampler.
Thanks for your responses.

That was the pref I was thinking of and no it won't help you across
different instruments from song to song

Correct.

You're getting it just right. I'm assuming you need to load different
songs because you actually have to PLAY songs back. I don't have to
run Logic. I merely use it as a rack of synths and live vocoder. As
such I only have one song and I never have to hit play so the
approach works for me. You have to have EXS virtual memory turned on.
Once it is you can have many more instruments loaded whose total ram
requirements far exceed that of your physical ram. It seems to work
well.

It might be if you had a standalone sampler like Kontakt triggered
via rewire???

Yup. That's just what happens on my gigs. Back and forth...

Yeah. That's what I do till I need to run another song.
Works great, as you say.

Oooohhhh! I didn't know about this till just now. Seems I
already had it checked but it seems to point to another issue I've
been encountering.
I hit play on a song and it goes a bar or two in and then
stops. Get an error message something like "Not read from disk in
time" or something like is mentioned on the virtual memory page of
the EXS.
I'm reluctant to mess with it now 'cause I have a job
tomorrow and I have been using a work around that gets me through the
gig. I'll check it out after I get past this weekend's work.
Perhaps I'll find a solution to that problem.
Man, there's a lot to these virtual instruments. Whew...

Hmm. Maybe, but I don't own either and I haven't caught up
from buying Logic 7 & my G4 laptop. New purchases are definitely not
on the current agenda here. :-)
Thanks for your help, Paul.
