Can someone tell me excactly
how to access and get banks/patches names that reside in my synths to
populate in the
instrument tracks list of LE?
e.g. korg o5r/w multi banks, combination and programs that are accessed from
its front
panel button I would like to also select these items by name via the logic's
track list..the
multi -instrument is set in the environment so i see its synth name ..but
the sound
selections seem genericly named and does not reflect the actual/current
names in the
synth
Using Logic express 7 with OS 10.3.8 ( No freemidi or oms obviously ,so how
is this done
in OS X and core midi ) Can't use soundiver with this vs of logic express
help..... I've heard ox XML but cant figure if this is what i need or how to
use it
here are my synths(old school)
roland d110,u220, yamaha tx7(with numerous banks that can be loaded),tx81z,
alesis d4,akais3000xl, korg dss-1( with numeros sample disks) etc..

The patch names for the first 15 banks can be redefined by you, but beyond
that you'll have to use a cheat sheet with bank numbers and patch numbers.
This is the one really irritating thing about Logic to me and it is an area
that desperately needs attention from the Logic programmers.
Look in your manual in the chapter about the environment for info. I think
it is in or near the section about multi-instruments.

At first I thought you meant 15 patches. That would be irritating.
But 15 BANKS? If that was the only irritating thing that desperately
needed attention I'd be ecstatic.

Considering my main sound module has probably around 100 banks it is a very
big deal to me. ;)

I can see that it would be, but would this problem be common enough
that it should be a top priority for changes to Logic?
Is there a workaround where you could get it to appear as several
different instruments, or do something like a page swap when you want
to access upper banks?
There is a similar problem with the old Proteus modules that only allow
64 addressable patches. In any one song, 64 is plenty, so you would
just load all those you need into the addressable locations, and put a
sysex sequence in your song, that you play one time at each session,
that loads these patches.

With respect to MIDI I believe that Logic is ahead of its competitors in
every aspect expect this one. So I'd have to say yes. Every other DAW out
there that I'm aware of makes this process simple and Cubase/Nuendo make it
elegant.

I don't think that there is, but the environment of Logic is so complex that
I could be wrong. Any suggestions would be welcome. My only current thought
would be to create 5 or 6 multi-instruments for the same sound module, I
haven't tried that approach yet, but it is ugly at best.
In Logic, you cannot name the banks, you can only access them by number or
by the name of the first patch in the bank - not very useful at all. Because
of that I still need a cheat sheet even for the first 15 banks that have
patch names just so I know what's in them.
In Cubase, not only can you name the banks, but the banks become meaningless
because you can create groups of instruments so that all of your piano
patches are in one group (basically a folder) regardless of the bank they
exist in and all of your bass patches are in another group. You can even
have groups within groups so that you have all of your fretless bass patches
in a subgroup of the bass group and all the picked bass patches in another
subgroup. It is really an awesome solution to a real problem and is
completely user configurable. I've left Apple feedback about this and I
really hope they do something in, perhaps, a 7.1 release.

I appreciate your suggestions, but using Logic's current approach is kind of
like driving a Volkswagen after driving a Mercedes. It is a disappointing
ride. ;)

Everyone... PLEASE...
If you have a feature that you think needs to be addressed by the designers
of Logic ---
and I think MIDI patch list implementation is in *dire* need of
improvement--- let them
know about it here:

Thanks!
