I had been using L-1 from Waves (TDM version) after my final mixdowns
when using an older system (Pro Tools, Sound Designer, etc.). Now I
am trying out Logic (express) 7 to see if I like it. Has anyone used
L-1 (or 2 or 3) from Waves with Logic 7? Their website says they
have an Audio Units version. Anyone use it? If not, is there a good
alternative?

I have been using the Wave's L3 (AU Version) in Logic since
it came out. The only Wave's plug-in I own. It works
great - and I could not live with out it! Pricey though.

They sell that one separately?

Yeap!
$600 US. Just the L3.

I use the AU version of L1 in Logic 7 with the public beta AU Waveshell.
Works fine, really a great all-in-one compressor. Can't give you an informed
comparison with other similar plugins.

L1 is a "limiter" hence the name "L1". Try out the
UAD-1's "precision
limiter". i just did a head to head test and found the UA PL to be
"tighter", "snappier", with less pumping artifacts, at
as close to the
same settings as I could get between the two.
Don't forget, with the UAD-1, you would need to either buy the big
package to get this, or you could buy the cheapest system (as they all
use the same hardware for DPS) and build from there, as you need the
plugin.
Oh, one more thing: UA DOESN'T make you pay every year to keep it
current ;-)

I'll second the recommendation on the UAD-1 precision limiter as well.
I also did a head to head test against the L2 (software not hardware)
from Waves with the same results. I find the PL cleaner as well
compared to either L1 or L2. You can drive the PL a little bit more
before distortion I found. What I find is that the low end is where
the UAD-1 PL becomes tighter and snappier.
Just my 2 cents,
