Isn't 'tap tempo' a farce in reality? No one can tap with much precision.
Just try making a click track and tap along with it, and you'll see you're
all
over the place. then take a song without a click track, and it will be
really
sloppy. If its audio, I use the set global tempo by locators/object size.

I often record bands without a click and then use the reclock song function,
this usually works pretty well.
I'll record me tapping along in 1/4-notes with the song then I make a
quantisation template from the kick mic. I use this to quantise 1st &
3rd
beats wherever the drummer played them. I'll fix this quantise when I'm
happy that it hasn't accidentally massed any bits up (if the drummer did
some weird kicks :-). Then I make a quantise template from the snare mic for
the 2 and 4 (again assuming the drummer's played in this style) and quantise
my tap again. Check it and the Reclock song. I can usually get a pretty good
result within an hour ... and that's amazing considering how long I used to
spend setting up tempo changes for remixes in the 80s.
To be honest I love this feature and think it works pretty well although I'm
sure it could be improved. I use tap tempo to bring the computer in in time
with a live band (usually use TouchTracks but now gravitating towards
Ableton) but other than that I agree that the tap tempo function for live
work is total pants.
