Subject: Logic 7 stuff
Message #178776
Hi fellow Lugers, I was compelled to create a list of all the annoyances people recently posted. It is located at http://homepage.mac.com/georgelegeriii/FileSharing5.html I am willing to collect and revise this list, and then submit it to Apple through the developers area (I am a developer member). This will give us the ability to bring detailed descriptions of these issues to the attention of the people who can do something about them (we hope). I will give this a one month deadline (January 1, 2005), due to the season, and the fact that nothing much will get done between now and January anyways. If you have any issues you do not see, or are able to give more detail, as well as explicit instructions on how to create or reproduce any of these issues, please send me and email using the link at the bottom of the page. I have also posted links for the Logic 7 icons I have collected over the last 2 years. Please feel free to download them, and enjoy the added detail you can add to your Logic song files. Enjoy.... However, it looks like at this point the list is simply copied and pasted from the LUG so I'd like to say that I greatly disagree with #39, 40 and 45 being included (for reasons I already posted, and others have agreed with), and #47 (as I recently discovered first-hand) is user error, not a Logic bug per se (although IMO Apple could do a much better job of making it clear that the audio instrument occupies insert #1 despite being selected in the Input flipmenu -- perhaps #47 could be rewritten to take this approach?). To the end of #46 I would add: "Please make this a TOP priority, above ANY new features, plugins or instruments. Long-time users DESERVE this, and new users would ultimately reap the benefits as well. As it stands Logic is *not* a ProTools killer in the industry's eyes, although we're sure that's Apple's intent... eventually." #12 needs MUCH more detail. As it stands I have no idea what this refers to. May I also suggest the following additions: - It has been proven many times over that Logic's audio engine is far less efficient than the competition, even when dealing with plain audio tracks with no plugins or other processing. This needs to be addressed and resolved ASAP. If Logic is to eventually dominate this industry it needs to be able to handle more tracks than the competition, hands down. Comments like "I compose in Logic but mix in Nuendo/ProTools/etc." should never be acceptable to the Logic team, or Apple. - Click-hold STILL not fixed (you should not have to click and hold to access a flipmenu, they should open immediately upon being clicked as all other Apple UI elements do). - Windows should remember their positions from session to session without the use of screensets. (For example, if I open the sample editor and resize and position it where I want it to be, Logic should remember those settings after it is quit and relaunched.) - Dump the "Pro-style" open and save dialogs and simply use the standard OS X dialogs instead. (This applies to FCP and DVDSP as well - I dunno who's idea this was but it's a dumb one. Apple is supposed to define GUI usability and these dialogs are so very difficult to read and navigate, and they don't follow the normal OS X UI conventions at all. Dump 'em. Please. Pretty please.) - The dialog and preference windows MUST show up in the Window menu, so if they accidentally fall behind another window they can still be accessed. - If 'use object name for filename' is selected then the user should not have to type in a "dummy" filename in the Set CoreAudio Record Path dialog box. Older versions of Logic automatically inserted the dummy name "audio", but Logic 7 provides nothing, and you cannot set the path without entering a filename (even though you've already instructed Logic on how to deal with this automatically). - True bezier curves for automation. - Streamline everything as much as possible (but here's the rub: without "dumbing down" the app at all). Nothing keeps new users away as much as being told (and rightly so) that Logic has a steeper learning curve than any other app. For example, to add an audio track the user should never have to go to the environment, never. The user should not have to add a bus to the arrange window to see it in the track mixer, or go to the environment and turn on it's "icon" setting just to add it in the arrange window! Things like this baffle and confuse newbies and advanced users alike, and none of the other apps require just hoop-jumping to perform simple tasks. Logic is the most powerful DAW available, but the problem is it often doesn't look like it, and it makes too many things too daunting or overly complicated to figure out without assistance. (And the manual is not much help in these things, either, but that's a topic for a separate entry.) - Apple needs a presence on the LUG, even if only for basic communication and announcements. The LUG is *the* forum for Logic users, no one really cares too much about Apple's discussion forums (and Sonikmatter's aren't anywhere near as populated or revered, either). If Apple cares about their core users they will participate in the LUG, and accept it as the primary forum for Logic users new and old. That's all I have time for right now. I'm excited about contributing more towards this list, and I look forward to any feedback from Apple!
