The best external hard drive is whatever the best internal hard drive is and then stuck in a box. The Seagate Cheetah takes a lot of beating as does (even better) the IBM 10,000 RPM (can't remember the model off the top of my head). It will depend on whatever host adapter you have as to what model to go for, but if you have an Ultra-Wide then a 'W' or and 'LW' drive with a single ended active terminator on the box, if you have an Ultra-2 host then an 'LW' drive with an LVD terminator on the box.
