Subject: Moving up and on . . . again!
Message #176406
Hi all, A couple of years ago the LUG advised me on upgrading - and saved me a lot of hassle - ta! Now then, as they say here in Yorkshire, early next year I'm plunging into OSX, Logic 7, and a G5 with additional internal audio drive; (giving up my stable OS9, G4 setup). I need to update my MAudio D1010 and 1010LT - I gather MAudio are working on a multicard for Core Audio. My existing audio drive (an IBM Deskstar, ugh!) finally collapsed a month outside its guarantee period! Quick queries : someone told me Logic won't run on the 2.5GHz G5 - true? All I use non-Logic are Equium/Firium (brilliant BTW), and some meters etc. like Inspector, PSP VU/PPM. Which disc drive to get - not IBM, and from recent discussion, not Maxtor? How about Seagate? - they seem not to suffer bad press. RAM - can't afford the Apple option - is Crucial OK? (used it up to now but G5's seem to be more picky. What else do I need to know? Logic 6 and above will run on any G5. Tiger (OS 10.4), which is expected to be released middle of 2005 will have support for multiple audio devices. I wouldn't count on MAudio to be forthcoming with more than basic support. To my knowledge the Firewire 410 still can't handle sleep mode and emits a huge spike on powerup. The new G5s come with Maxtor drives. I recently purchased a 200 gig Western Digital and returned it (for a Maxtor) as it produced an annoying whining sound. Apple have chosen Maxtor for a reason (they are actually really quiet) and I doubt they would put an unreliable or underperforming drive into these machines. The G5s are really very well designed and built with a lot of attention to detail. Getting the correct type of RAM is apparently quite important with the G5s, so I would get it from a supplier who can guarantee compatibility. Tom

No problems here. Crucial guarantees compatability. You might get it cheaper elsewhere but I prefer a little piece of mind... Irwin www.irwinshur.com
