Hi,
We need to reconfigure a couple of computers (both running Panther) because
the boot drives have gotten too close to being full. Here is what I've
thought of doing - I'd appreciate knowing about any potential
"gotchas":
The computers have:
Logic Pro 7
Waves Platinum 5
Stylus RMX, Atmosphere, Trilogy
Under VST2AU:
Plex
Xphraxe
Groove Agent
LM4
Dcota
All Virtual Guitarists
UAD-1 Powered Plugins
Absynth 2
Kontakt
Reaktor
Pluggo
Zebra
There are a bunch of other music apps:
Live 4
Reason 2.5
Sibelius
Finale
I have Vienna on an external 250GB FW800 drive, using EXS Manager to
maintain links.
The computers have:
Drive 1) 120 GB partitioned 40/80 (40 is the boot partition) SATA drive
Drove 2) 160 GB partitioned 60/100
I want to:
1) clone the 40 gig boot partition onto the 100 gig partition on drive 2
2) make an image of the 60 gb partition and store it on drive 2
3) Blow away the partitions on drive 1 and reformat as a single 120gb
partition.
4) Clone the system that I cloned in step 1, back onto 120 gig drive 1
5) restore the image from step 2 onto drive 1.
Hopefully this will give me a boot drive with lots of extra space on it.
With respect to installs, and authorizations, how do you suggest I proceed?
Thanks,
Rob Yale

I just did something similar and had problems with permissions on CCC.
Consider this when choosing your cloning software.

What cloning software do you recommend?

I would avoid using CCC - although it's a great application, it will screw
up a lot of your software authorizations. I've tried a load of cloning
applications to try and find one which takes a true disk image, and the best
I've found is CopyCatX by Subrosasoft. It keeps all your software
authorizations intact - assuming no hardware on your system they may be
linked to has changed of course. They also do an application called
VolumeWorks which enables you to resize partitions after they've been
created without reformatting, plus a load of other disk orientated stuff.
With those two applications you should be able to achieve what you need to.
I use CopyCatX every few days to take a backup of my OS volume and restore
it if I sense it's becoming corrupted, or things start misbehaving. Unlike
other app's it copies the whole partition, not just the files on it, and
somehow this makes for a more accurate image and protects all those secret
files which govern authorizations.
Hope this helps.

I've just done a similar thing, but I first backed everything onto
Firewire drives. I used the Panther restore utility with no problems,
apart from one or two minor authorisation hiccups, (just re-entering
the code in Snapz Pro, Altiverb was fine - no annoying send and
response codes to wait days for) but some of the other answers have
offered good advice about other software.
One "gotcha" that got me was that a clone may not boot (on
Firewire)
unless the target drive has been freshly erased with zeros. Takes time
but until I realised this I'd already chucked what was probably a
perfectly good drive.
Although OS X is not suppposed to need defragging, this is an ideal
time to reformat anyway.

I've never, never once, had this happen with CCC, under Jaguar or
Panther. My cloned backup system disk boots and all applications run,
no problems. What happened in your case?

I'm quite honestly not sure. The drive copy that I made did not boot
properly and based on what I found on different mac lists, it was a
permissions problem. They do warn you to run the disk check several times
before cloning to make sure that the drive is free of problems. I did so but
still had the issue. I took a second drive (FW) and it cloned properly
without a problem. I'm just glad I made two copies. I, too, have used this
package in the past without a problem but in this case, the copy just
wouldn't boot.

Hi Brian
I can assure you, CCC will screw up any Native Instruments authorizations (I
have lots of them) and I'm pretty sure it also affects Spectrasonics
authorizations, possibly Waves and some others. I've been using CopyCatX
for a good few months now so I don't recall the complete list from last time
I tried with CCC. Perhaps Sonalksis, Elemental auth's (just guessing now) -
there were certainly a few others.
CCC is great for almost everything, but I can assure you there are
authorizations it will reset or remove. No argument intended, but I
promise I'm not making this up.

See my other reply
Not booting on Firewire is very often due to not having erased the
disk with zeros, this is documented somewhere on the CCC site or FAQs.
It's a pain if you already several partitions, but that seems to be
the situation.
Also recommnded is to repair permissions with Disk Utility, not CCC.

(2 different computers - my experience)
1st use of CCC from a 20 gig to 100 gig no problems worked PERFECT
2nd use of CCC from 80 gig to 250 gig - so far the only thing that didn't
work is band in a
box 12 osx - i reinstalled - and masterwriter - i have to call for re-auth.
Otherwise - wavearts, fm7, psp, zebra, ca5000 and ALL other plugs work FINE
and are
authorized!

Again, that has nothing to do with the permissions, though, but
something specific to the copy protection. And is reauthorizing that
big of a deal? (I don't mean that sarcastically, either - I own none of
those plugs.)

I'd be very interested to find out what they all are Rob. Would you
mind giving us a full list? Are there any you'd recommend as a
"Hendrix" plug-in?

Hi Jules,
I checked out their offerings, and I feel that a combination of their volume
tools and their cloning tool are just what I needed.
Thanks to everyone else on this thread who weighed in with their excellent
opinions!

Please be aware that subrosoft VolumeWorks will not work if you need
the drive or the partition for anything in OS9. It's great for OSX only
though.

Yes, thanks, I saw that. But I'll be glad if I never see OS9 or Classic
again for the rest of my life!
What is the best way to completely expunge and cauterize Classic off my
system?
Thanks,
Rob

Has anyone actually tried CopyCatX? Does it work well? Does it, in
fact, retain authorizations?
Has anyone compared it to Retrospect?
Thanks,

Stefan - I posted with the original CopyCatX suggestion and made it clear I
had tried it, bought it, use it regularly, and that it works fine and
retains authorizations, as it creates an actual image of the drive or
volume, instead of just copying files.
Hope this helps.

Hi,
A "Hendrix" plugin? If only!
The virtual guitarists are:
Virtual Accoustic Guitarist
Virtual Electric Guitarist
Virtual Guitarist: Electric Edition
