Is there any easy way to set up a Logic Control (or MCU) to be a
pattern sequencer? I'd like to have the faders control pitch by
default, and the knobs control length. Ideally the faders could be
flipped to control velocity or some other CC on a per-step basis and
the buttons could be used to mute/unmute steps and tie/untie steps.

What a cool idea!

I imagine some sort of melding with the old environment-based
Universal Step Sequencer would be possible.
You'd use an audio object to control each step, routing the CC/Fader
messages that result from Audio object control into the USS.
The main difficulty might be vpots->length, since the environment
delay object isn't remote controllable, thus step sequencers built
with it tend to use switching networks to produce different set note
lengths rather than continuously variable lengths.
Hmmmm ...
Or ... perhaps you could use the Audio object front ends and pipe the
resulting midi to Numerology or some other suitable app. Might be
easier and more flexible?
