Subject: B-faderboxes and Logic 7?
Message #176254
Most virtual instruments have a lot of rotary controls in their GUI so I think about buying a cheap rotary controller in addition to my microKONTROL. 1 - does anyone work with Behringer's BCR2000 in Logic 7? Is there a control surface and does the feedback from software work properly? 2 - the BCR2000 has a rather big housing. Would you recommend another (smaller) controller with 24-32 knobs and LED circles? Peter Ostry

At the moment using the BCR2000 with L7 is a bit of a DIY adventure. You can easily configure the BCR so that each of its 56 rotaries (8 x 4 banks plus 24) sends proper MIDI incremental change commands that L7's new controller setup can readily understand but there is no way to provide feedback to the LED rings, at least no way I have discovered. I believe L7's control surface scheme requires a special software plug-in for feedback to work (or special software similar to LC Xmu to translate between "BCR speak" and an existing plug in like Logic Control). So far I've used the BCR by assigning rotaries to on screen software instruments using the new MIDI Learn facility. Once the BCR is setup with one of its memories configured with the incremental commands mentioned above on all rotaries this process is easy and fast. Logic keeps the different plug-in types sorted so if you assign four instruments types everything will work as expected depending on which instrument currently is selected. This is very nice as you do not need to switch BCR presets to manage multiple instruments or plug-ins (though you could as that works well in the BCR). As far as size goes I find that it is about as small and the controllers as dense as practical without it being to being too small for comfortable adjusting of the rotaries. Any smaller and the unit would need smaller knobs with possibly too little space between for bigger fingers. Also the BCR2000 is less expensive than any other "knob box" with that much "knobbage", and most of the competitors do not provide endless rotaries. BTW you can save some width on your desktop by removing the end caps of the BCR. Easy enough to do (there's metal sides underneath). Looks like two or more units could possibly be attached. If you have more specific questions feel free to ask here or off list if you prefer. drK
