Hi,
I've gotten to the point where I have a final mix bounced to a stereo
file. Is there any way to transpose this to a close key?
If the answer is no (I'm afraid it is), do I have to go all the way
back to the MIDI files, transpose them and re-record them to audio? Is
there any way to transpose the audio files?
It's not always possible to know the singers range until you start to
work with them, you know?
I would appreciate any help. Thank you.

there is no way that won't sound terrible. you will have to go back to
the MIDI stage and progress from there. If you did want to try
transposing the file, keep in mind DSP based transposition of complex
spectra is not intelligent, meaning it will know nothing about harmony,
it just shift everything up by 2 steps for example. and it will make
the timbre sound weird, so don't bother.

Hi Barbara, you could try PitchWorx DX at...
http://www.delaydots.com/xproducts.html
It's a DX plugin so it won't work on a Mac I'm afraid. I've used it
in Soundforge on a PC and it works very well, but if you want to
transpose a lot (more than 5 or 6 semitones), the track will start to
sound strange.
BTW, it's free..!

Has anyone suggested Ableton Live? Download the demo and see what you
can do with it. It might work. I've used it to speed up final mixes,
and it works pretty darn good. The pitch shifting in it it very good.

If it's for a demo,I would suggest to use the "Time & Pitch
Machine" in
LA.
I don't know if there is a professional way to transpose a full mix anyway!
- So,first, make a copy of the Audio file you want to process.
- Import this file in LA.
- Double click on it (by default it should open the "Audio
Window")
- Go to menu "Factory",open "Time & Pitch Machine"
- The transpose function works in cents (1/100) of semitone so,
- If you want to transpose one full step below, write : "-200"
You can even prelisten the result.
So,good luck, but don't expect exactly the same quality than your 1st mix.

Just picked up on this string too, so forgive me if this has been mentioned,
but Melodyne is awesome for transposing audio.

Monophonic though

No, you can do it stereo - I've done it. It requires non-interleaved mono
left and mono right files like ProTools. Set up the bridge on each channel,
record both into Melodyne, and adjust each the same amount for pitch. In
logic pan the two files left and right.

Monophonic as opposed to polyphonic. Melodyne can't dissect a chord. Or can
it ?

Not that I know of... that's why I wrote it, but apparently we need
to also discuss music theory a little bit... :-(

Thank you all for your thoughts and info.
Ryan, it may be a moot point because I don't own Melodyne and it is a
bit pricy… How do I do the above with a bounced mix? How do I bounce
down to two mono files in Logic?
What is the bridge you refer to?
I take it that I'm going to have to go all the way back to the MIDI
stage, transpose the files and re-recod audio. I'm looking into
Melodyne though as an option for the future. What have you used it for?
Thanks again.

The easiest way to go about this is go to the website
http://www.celemony.com and download the Melodyne demo. There's also a
video demonstration using a fully produced song of audio only tracks
which they transpose as you watch.
