Subject: Unitor 8 MK1
Message #169933
Hey i just bought a Unitor MK1 on Ebay. I was wondering if a serial to USB adapter will work with my G5 for it? A note to emagic on your website you go to Unitor and read and it says USB there why not say the difference between MK1 and MK2. Also is there an upgrade path if a serial to USB adapter does'nt work or am I hosed?

Hi Kdendrikhughes. I did exactley the same thing, bought a Unitor 8 mk1 on = e-bay. The good news is that you're not hosed but the bad news is you'll ha= ve to spend a bit of money to get your Unitor to work. There is a serial to usb adapter that does work but only in OS9 But, you can buy a USB compatible AMT8 or Unitor 8 - daisy chain them through the serial, update the Uintor 8 software through the files at www.emagic.de and away you go. I'm afraid thats the only solution but at least it works. Still, buying a U= nitor 8 for about £80 and a second hand AMT or Unitor 8 mark II is still cheaper and yo= u get more ports. Evil Andy

Why would you add such a weak link to your G5 system as a USB audio interface? The unitor is okay for a mac without firewire, but you should be using a firewire interface like the MOTU 828 with a G5. Don't take my word for it. Ask some more pros out there and see if anyone with a G5 is using USB for audio interface when firewire is so much faster and reliable with the G5. It is also recommended. Good Luck Marten

Just in case no one else chimes in - I agree - forget USB Audio interfaces. Firewire is far superior! My 2 Cents Worth Dave Shirk Pamlico Sounds

OK, I'll chime in - nobody makes an 8-port firewire midi interface... You are correct - but I tried to emphasize Audio - meaning analog and not MIDI. I am just against USB Analog Audio Interfaces via USB. I run realtime Video via Firewire 400 all day - so 8 channels of 24/48 audio is no problem. Sorry for the confusion! Dave Shirk

The Stealth Serial Port is what you want, but it currently only works for 1st gen G5's. I'm waiting for a revision that works in 2nd gen G5's. http://www.geethree.com/stealth/stealth.html It gives you a serial port where the modem normally goes. -- Rocky Road - in Oz "Fleeing from the Cylon tyranny, the last Battlestar, Galactica, leads a ragtag, fugitive fleet, on a lonely quest, for a shining planet known as Earth."
