Is there any way to record the audio output of an audio instrument at the
same time the
midi is recorded? I don't want to have to physically patch an output on my
audio interface
to an input. I don't want to use the freeze function or bounce. I just want
to hit record,
stop, wait for the overview then continue.
Normally, I'd be okay with just leaving the performance as MIDI, or using
freeze, but due
to the random nature of some of the sounds I am using for this project, the
playback is
not always the same every time I hit play. I would rather capture the
performance I heard
while recording and be done with it.
Thanks,
Pete

Given all the restrictions you set, the answer is No.

Yep, I didn't think so. Does anyone know if this can be accomplished
virtually
with either MOTU' cuemix DSP or RME's Total MIX? I've been considering an
audio interface upgrade anyway.
Pete
MOTU cuemix does not allow you to route the computer audio out back
into the mixer. but you could do this with a real physical cable. you
could to it with digital audio, or analog audio. I often do this for
the reason you mention, usually with analog, and it sounds fine. I have
a Metric Halo 2882 at work I will check if this is possible with, it
has a very impressive matrix function.

I have not found a way to do this with RME Totalmix either - I use a
coax or lightpipe digital cable and simply record stuff back in as I
need it. Easy.

Yes. Investigate the "Wormhole" AU plugin - one somewhere in the
audio
path after the AI, another on an Audio Input object, as a send/receive
pair. Expect to deal with some offset on the recorded audio due to
buffering latency.

Yeah, I use SPDIF loopback here too. Works very well. Apparently the
new Fireface _can_ route outputs to inputs internally, and this will
also be added to TotalMix for existing RME hardware.

The Lynx 2 b can also record internally with Loopback (4 stereo pairs I
believe), if you don't have one of the expansion modules. If you have
one, you can also do it using an I/O with an spidf.
