I'm sure all the music you work with is up-to-the-minute 12-tone stuff with
rippling chromatic runs everywhere but back in the 17th century there was
this music with diatonic scales - they had whole steps and half steps -
hence the "di".
These quaint scales leant themselves to harmonious chords and other archaic
noise forms. Of course, in this post-modern, age we are liberated from that
straight jacket and can compose never-ending motifs on 17 step per octave
scales - or whatever aural torment our hearts desire.
