Yes! Yes! Yes!!!!!!!!!
Logic is very crap (= goddam primitive) in this particular area.

Hopefully, there will be an improvement to all Emagic softsynths. I
cannot stand sifting through 3 levels of menus to change patches.

Actually switiching patches in logic synths is a DREAM... here's a
tip for you... I simply have keys 1 & 2 (of the row on the top of the
keyboard) assigned to "previous preset" and "next
preset" (don't
quote me onthe actual keycommand...I'm not next to my logic) and I
can just go up and down presets that way... I wish VST, AU
synths/plugins use these keycommands... then I'd be really happy...

You don't have to do that. Assign a computer key to "next plug-in
setting" and "previous plug-in setting". These key commands
work when
the plug-in is opened to the graphic interface.
1) Double-click the plug-in to open the synth
2) Scroll through the pre-sets with the buttons
Does not work with third party AU instruments. Only the Emagic virtual
instruenst.
All the best

Huh?
Just because of that "next/previous" function?
Say, if you bought a hardware synth, would you consider it to be a
"dream"
feature if patch selection could be done only via some
"next"/previous"
function? No way! Most likely you wouldn't even buy such a synth because
you'd have strong doubts regarding the mental sanity of the programmers!
Yes, I admit there's one advance in the way Logic handles preset switching:
You can access all of them all the time without loading any banks - which
could as well be as a strong disadvantage in case you really have a LOT of
patches.
But then, after having worked with Cubase SX for some time now as well, I
must say that overall the patch selection scheme of it is 100x better.
Not only that after loading a bank you could just do it the same way as in
Logic, no, it's even got some sort of "preview in context"
function for
patches. Your list will just stay open as long as you don't confirm your
selection, and whatever patch you adress (with the arrow buttons) will be be
playable. Once you're more happy with it than with what you had before, you
load the patch. This is incredibly nice as you can "try out" a few
patches
before actually making a decision for the previously loaded one or any new
one.
In addition to that, patch selection the Cubase way allows for program
changes. Another nice thing as you could just sit down at your master
keyboard and press the appropriate program change buttons without ever
thinking about scrolling through patch lists as well.
Seriously, patch management and selection is one of the weakest things with
all plugins in Logic - defenitely quite beyound my mindset how someone could
call this a "dream".

Thanks for that tip. That is certainly a big improvement over what I
was previously doing.
However, I still think Emagic (Apple) could do a better job of preset
management. Suppose I want to flip around different presets rather than
scroll through them. Or if I want to change instrument groups. If a
hardware synth can display all of its patches in one window (e.g. Korg
Triton), why can't softsynths...they have a huge graphical advantage
over hardware synths. That advantage should be used!

Couldn't agree more. At the very least, Virtual instruments should be as
easy to deal with
as the MIDI instruments they're meant to replace. Why doesn't the AU
protocol - if it's so
danged advanced and superior - have a standardized control for preset and
bank
selection? I'd be happy enough if I could at least see a bank at a time on
screen, the way
Multi-instrument patch name banks are displayed. Fix that, and then fix the
"feature"
where you have to select a AUi in the arrange page before hearing your edits
in the Matrix
display, and I'll be SO much happier. Okay, not happy. But less grumpy.

Do you use alot of hardware? Lets see, my Waldorf Micro Q, Access
Virus, Waldorf Microwave, Nord Modular, Korg ER-1, Korg MS2000,
Novation BassStation, etc all make me push a +/- button or a dial to
scroll through patches.. Id love to see a hardware synth with a big
window that shows me a patch browser, but um those dont exist..

If you would've been reading my post a bit more thoroughly you'd know that I
wasn't saying a hardware synth (or whatever module for that matter) wouldn't
have a patch +/- functionality - but NONE of them comes ONLY with this
failry limited option. ALL the hardware synths you mentioned support program
changes as well in addition! Which is what makes patch organisation a lot
easier.

Yamaha Motif, S90
Korg Triton
Roland Fantom
Kurzweil K2000/2500/2600 etc
all have a big patch browser windows. Notice how all of these are
workstation keyboards, and the ones you listed are more specialty
instruments. When using SoundDiver with hardware, you do get nice big
windows of all your patches.
I personally don't care at all about the subject, since I just use
another instrument for every sound, but I understand why people are
disappointed. let not take away MIDI features from the new virtual
studio!

I agree, this is really annoying... /H
