sonics, ergonomics, and workflow are all affected by this. i strongly
prefer having an external mixer. i also have many inputs into the
computer available to me to give me an optimum amount of routing
options. i appreciate that flexibility. it allows me to more easily
integrate outboard gear. i happen to believe a daw is part of a pro
studio, but it isn't the whole studio. integration of real outboard
gear is part of my working method.
this is a often talked about subject that covers everything from sonics
to workflow to routing to mix recall. i'd look into threads about this
subject on places like prosoundweb as the subject gets well hashed out
there. there are strong opinions on this and it merits looking in to.
however, you have more things to consider on this topic than what
you've posted so far. assesments of the audio summing in logic and the
convenience of it's mix automation are germane.

I can't get the feature "Capture last take as recording" to work
with
audio. With midi it's working fine here. Can someone enlighten me about
this - is it a midi only feature?

Yes - otherwise you'd have to be invisibly recording in the background
on every audio track, to magically capture it after the fact. Ouch.
With midi, by comparison, it's a very low-overhead operation to
maintain a realtime record buffer as midi data comes in.
But you can achieve this for audio by activating "punch on the
fly".
Any record-enabled audio tracks will then be invisibly recording while
in play - you don't need to press record. To "capture" the take at
any
time, hit "record toggle" while still playing. You'll be able to
drag
the recorded region boundaries right back to where you started playing.
Added bonus - you can select other tracks (including midi tracks)
while doing this and it won't glitch the recording. You must have an
audio track selected when starting playback (any audio track will do,
doesn't have to be record-enabled), and when record-toggling to
capture. In between, you can select whatever you want.

Yes, I believe this works with midi only.

This is only a MIDI feature.
I think I remember a method for capturing audio:
You must be in QuickPunch mode. The premise of
QuickPunch mode is that the drive is always capturing
audio in preparation for the instant you hit RECORD,
so there's no gap upon the punch-in point.
So let's say you are playing Logic and then you hit stop.
But there is audio that you intended to be recorded at
a the record-armed track. I think you just hit pause and
then record. Then you will see a tiny audio region. You
simply pull back the region boundary all the way to the
start of the last time you pressed play. I have no clue
if this will work.... it's merely from memory and I'm not
in front of Logic now. I've never tried it, because i ALWAYS
use record mode when any audio tracks are record armed.
There is no "waste" of resources when you record disposable
audio. It's too easy to delete garbage takes to NOT record them.
Plus, it means I never have to toggle between Input Monitor and
Auto Monitor.... I am always on Auto Monitor.

Ah, yes. That's what I was looking for. Thanks John and f-erenc for
quick and excellent answers.

Damn, I learn something every year. This is great. Being
able to select other tracks while "recording" is an excellent
reason to change my recording methods to this. Geez, it
all makes perfect sense too... but sometimes putting 2 or
3 obvious features together to form a new paradigm isn't
obvious right away.
