Subject: Re: CoreMIDI making up it's own timing?

Hello fellow luggers, I did some re-cabling, re-routing, and re-tooling this weekend and decided to change the way I work a bit. The motivation for this project was to try and figure a way to be able to use my second MOTU 828 mkII in 6.4.1/10.3.3. regardless of it's multiple interfaces limitation. The good news is that with a few optical cables and CueMix console, I was able to treat my second 828 as a standalone ad/da converter and I can re-incorporate my hardware/midi modules back into the setup. But..... While testing my hardware synths to make certain I could route them properly, I noticed some midi timing issues, so I started experimenting. I began by recording a repeating quarter note kick drum with a sharp attack onto an audio track from one of my synths. The timing was horrible. First of all, the first note came early, and the all of the subsequent notes started drifting farther back. By the time I got to the fifth measure, there was a huge drift. Now, I know not to expect sample accurate midi timing, but this had drifted about +500 samples from the beat, while the first note was -45 samples off. So I started testing.... My first theory was a bad clock (I am all digital now, so no external mixer whatsoever). I thought that maybe the signal traveling through the ADAT channels was drifting because of a different sample rates. No luck with that theory - after many different ideas including going back to just one interface so there was only one master, I finally routed my synth's audio to a the analog ins of a completely external cd burner, bypassing the interfaces altogether. I then burned the cd, re-imported into Logic, and the timing inconsistencies were still there. So maybe it's the synth or the interface..... Tried other synths. Same thing. I switched midi interfaces (I use an AMT8 primarily, but have a few other USB interfaces lying around). Same problem. I am having a nostalgia attack for my hardware, but this is just not even close to usable. Has anyone seen these kinds of issues with their midi timing? Playing to the beat of a horrible drummer, Mike

. Has anyone seen these > kinds of issues with their midi timing? > > Playing to the beat of a horrible drummer, > > Mike Yep. Same problem here, as I reported some time back. I don't think it's a digital clock issue, as my system is locked to an Apogee. For my midi interface, I'm using a MOTU MTP USB. I've not tested this with any other programs, but from what I've seen, your assessment is correct. Logic and Core Midi has really sloppy timing on external modules. Additionally, I believe there are problems with Logic and Core Audio. The bigger the session, the farther off newly recorded audio parts are placed in the arrangement. My audio gear is a MOTU 2408 MKIII, and a RME Digiface. I've experienced the problem on both. best, Jon

This issue isn't crtical to me, since I rarely want to use hardware these days, but it makes using midi in an arrangement almost impossible. Anyone else with successes or failures that they would like to share?
