Hi everybody,
Just joined this group and hope somebody can help me. I have purchased a
Tascam US-428 to use with Logic (OSX), as an audio/MIDI interface and
control surface. I chose this because I couldn't afford a Logic or Mackie
control, and this looked like it would provide quite a bit of "bang for
the buck"
I tried it out last night, and I couldn't really get much happening. There
were a
few environments included on the CD that came with the unit, but I couldn't
get any action out of the UUS-428. So - anybody using one of these with
Logic? How is it working for you? Any quick tips? Any alternative
suggestions
- I could probably exchange this for something else, but I haven't really
given
it a chance yet.
cheers
Blair

If you're running L6 in OSX you don't need to use the enviroments
from the cds. If anything, I'd think those would only cause problems
when trying to use it as a control surface.
L6 has a control surface plug-in that supports the US-428 directly.
Go the the control surface preferences and install it from there - I
seem to recall it needing to be installed manually, rather
than 'scan'.
I did have a hell of a time getting Logic to work with it. I've owned
the US428 for a couple of years, and used it on both windows and OSX.
Tascam's drivers have been, to put it kindly, unpredictable. I had to
uninstall/reinstall on OSX at least 4 times before it worked
properly. I have a Logic Control and XT which I use as my main mixing
station. The 428 serves as a remote transport control over by my
keyboards. I don't use it for audio, but as a control surface it does
the job I ask of it. Gettin it to work was a frustrating process
though.
best,
EoS
I'll just repost a mail I wrote for a guy in the same situation, some time
ago,I hope youll find some clarification there. It was about assigning the
US428 commands to the Logic functions /
"" When US428 is installed with the right driver (it depends on
the OS
you're working with,so check in your system and at the TASCAM's site if you
have the right one),
-Open Logic,go to the menu "Option" -> "Track
Automation" ->
"Track Automation Setting".
there you'll open a floating window.
-Click on the button : "Learn Message" (I'm sure you guess what to
do next!)
-Move a fader, push a button or turn a pot of the US428;a code will appear in
the message part of the window. Normally (at least for me on OSX) Logic will
reconise which type of format and mode it must assign to each command,so
(normally!!),don't worry about these.
-Click again on the "learn message" button ("done"),your
US428's commande is
assigned to its function.
-Repeat this for every button, pot or fader, try to be organised so you don't
forget any command.
-Close the window and... Have a Fly!!!
Good Luck, ""
For the rest, the only thing I miss with the US428 is the moving faders! But
for this price,I think I'm dreaming!
Ha yes, I miss also the pause button on the transport bar,but it seems that
the button "F3" take this function (strange to me,but...).
The quality of the sound you can get,is very good to me: I'm working right
now on a project involving around 32 audio tracks, and, though some people say
that uSB interfaces are not made for multi track recording,I must say that
it doesn't give me any problem,so... Good Luck again!
