Hi there,
there have been a number of very enthusiast posts about the Metric Halo
audio hardware.
There is a +DSP option available with various plug-ins that look very
interesting. I wrote to
the Metric Halo people and apparantly there is no way to control the DSP
functions from
within Logic right now, but apparantly they work on it for the future.
My question is, does anybody use the 2882 +DSP box? How do you control its
local plug-
ins? what about TC for automation? What about RAM, because for the time
being you need
to run them as separate stand-alone applications?
I would be glad for some info, I'm about to order the box but I'm not sure
as to which one
to take. The +DSP is USD 600 more expensive...
Cheers

Yes.

You control them with a stand-alone console application.

Huh??

The Console uses very little RAM, and you can quit the console after
you set things up. The DSP functions run off of the MIO's own
hardware, so they do not use the CPU resources of the Mac.

Hi,
I've been a 2882+DSP user for well over a year. I'm also part of the
beta test group. Recently the Public release basically caught up with
what the test group has. It's true that, at present, there is no
direct way to use +DSP plugs from within the host sequencer, but I'm
told that this is part of the roadmap. I have come to believe what the
company tells me. At present, the available plugins can be part of a
latency free monitor mix, and there's already a nice assortment of
plugins, including a +DSP based version of Metric Halo's Channel Strip
(called the MIOStrip) This is basically a combined
compressor/limiter/parametric eq. Sort of a "swiss army knife"
plug
in. Currently, I use a couple of the MIO's plugins on my monitor mix,
and am still using a hardware TCElectronics effects unit via digital
loop to sweeten the monitor mix with reverb. We're told that a +DSP
based reverb unit, tentatively called the "HaloVerb" is coming
fairly
soon. I'm anxious to get that so I can put my TC unit up for sale
(even though it's a very good unit)
What is the biggest reason to go with Metric Halo? Sound Quality. It
just sounds amazing. Also, flexibility in routing.

You should absolutely get the +DSP. Things are just starting to get
Really interesting.

Stefan, you can route the DSP so you're tracking a dry signal in Logic and
monitoring
the wet DSP signal, is that correct?
And a side question: Did MH intend the DSP to be used mainly for monitoring
or for
tracking? I would want it for monitoring, but I'm curious because I'm
concerned about
support down the road for that application (I'd want to know that the
monitoring
software/driver would remain robust, etc.).

Yes, that's what I'm doing now. I'm using MIO based plugs for
compression, eq, etc. I'm also using the digital in/out of the MIO to
add reverb from a hardware unit that has SPDIF in/out. The method for
doing this is explained nicely in the manual.

tracking?
This I don't actually know, as I'm not the developer. I do know that
it's evolving, and there are many more plans for use of DSP. It's
already great, as is.
Regards,
Stefan
