Hi,
I haven't bought a MIDI/Audio interface yet. Just got Logic Pro days ago.
I hear that the new Yamaha 188X interface it the way to go because of MLAN.
What does
that mean to me? Do you agree?
thanks in advance.

Mlan Iis mostly the same as firewire, just yamaha's name for it,
basically. Kind of like firewire and Sony has their own name, ilink...

Sorry, not true. You might want to do some reading about it. Mlan is
an audio/midi networking solution that Yamaha has been working on for
years. While it's true that it uses Firewire, I'm not even sure that
Firewire is absolutely the only connection standard in the spec. I
had just about given up on seeing it REALLY working right. I attended
Namm in January and was given a personal tour of new Mlan solutions
from Yamaha. The demo that I saw was pretty incredible. It involved
the new O1X Mlan production studio, Motif ES 6 synth, and computer(s)
running Logic, Cubase, and Digital Performer. The solution offers
extremely low latency, and the ability for members of the network to
seamlessly use, for example, "horsepower" from other machines in
the
network. The O1X for example, could use an effects processor in the
Motif or vice versa. Hey, I'm not an expert. I've already made a
significant investment in a different solution. But...if I hadn't
bought yet, I would do some serious research into this platform.
Here's a link with a description of the O1X:

No, this isn't true. mLan is actually an entire protocol
developed by Yamaha that happens to travel down the
Firewire connection.
In this way, mLan is like MIDI (another protocol) except
that it has way more channels, includes audio and sync
(maybe video too?).

Ya know I was just baiting the flame with this one. And while I kinda
knew it was like this, I haven't done MY research into yet another new
"standard"...
So I guess before I do, does it actually work now? I had heard it
really didn't/doesn't yet, more of the "it's a good idea but"...

I have heard that with OS 10.3.3 Apple added some new features and/or
stability to mLAN, making it useable as it had not been before. New
drivers are also available for such gear as the Apogee Trak 2's
Firewire card. Sorry, URL unknown but it might be mlancentral.com.

Is the Mlan usuable with Logic?
> Is the Mlan usuable with Logic?
Supposedly, as Yamaha did have to wait for Apple to embed the mLAN
drivers into the latest Panther release, delaying their 01X
console/interface compatability with OSX. But since I've had one for
review, it's not really worked out.
Yamaha are being very helpful in finding out why (Although my Laptop
died this weekend so I won't know for a bit) I spoke with Gerhard and
Apple representative on the mLAN integration thing while at the Musik
Messe this weekend, but I just got the company line - "it's nothing
to do with us or Apple" - so how come it is built into Panther 10.3.x?
Promises to be great - the 01X is a brilliant concept - midi/audio
i/o, digital console, and Mackie Control style remote capabilities -
but not quite there yet - and not clear who it is who will be fixing
it.

Sure. mLAN is part of core audio in 10.3.3. The 01X has Logic
Control functionality built in, so its your Audio Interface, MiIDI
Inteface, Digital Mixer compressors and EQ on all Channels, Effects
Processor and Remote Control Surface all in one.

I recently purchased the Yamaha 01X to use with Logic. Within a short
period of time, I was able to get all the functions of the board
working with Logic. It's very convenient to have everything at your
fingertips. It sounds great, and no noticeable latency, though I
haven't done any scientific tests. I'm sure others have. I haven't
done much with the MIDI aspect of it. The Studio Manager software is
cool. It mirrors every function of the 01X on the screen, and runs
along with Logic.
The i88X which is what the original question was about is only an I/O
device. It doesn't have the compressors or EQ, FWIU.
The 01X comes with some free plugins that will prove useful at some
point... I think that as a quick and dirty, all-in-one solution, the
01X is an excellent choice. Some might argue, however, that having
separate devices for all functions eases any upgrade to any single
unit. While that may be true, for ~$1400, you can't get all the
functionality of the 01X in standalone devices, and a single firewire
cable to your machine.

The Tascam 1884 does the control surface/ 8X8 + lightpipe and spdif I/O
as well for about the same price. Works with
Logic/live/reason/Nuendo... and also works great on my PC...

Tascam doesn't have anykind of display and can't control Logic/AU
synths which at least for me is very important.
01 X is on my list of things to buy :-)

Sure. The FW-1884 is nice, too. It's in the same price range as the
01X. What I was saying is that for that price, you can't get a
separate mixer, I/O module, DAW controller, etc.
I did look at the FW-1884 also. It has more physical outputs than the
01X to support surround output, and it also has the optional FE-8
expansion which adds 8 more faders to the board. I think this tops
out at 128 faders. The Tascam also has more MIDI I/O, and all
channels have 1/4" and XLR connectors. Pretty cool. This board was
definitely a contender.
For me, since I don't do surround, don't have a lot of XLR-based gear,
and don't mind paging through 8 channels at a time, the bonuses on the
01X are the LCD, the two stereo effects processors, and the included
plugins. While the FW-1884 has the soft LCD (on the monitor), I like
the ability to see everything on the board. Especially since this
makes the mixer portable/standalone without the need of a computer.
The 01X also has a smaller footprint, which is good in my cramped
recording space.
I suspect that Yamaha and Co. will be doing some cool things with
mLAN. I'm not betting the house on it, but it looks like there's some
buzz finally surfacing. I think we might see an expansion module with
more inputs and faders, maybe a third-party effects module... Perhaps
a mLAN-capable TC Powercore.
I'm glad you're enjoying your FW-1884. I'm equally happy with my choice.

And the cool thing is this: 25 years ago when I played with the Porta
studio 144, I never dreamed this stuff would exist... I love it all!

And yes, enjoy your tools as well. Either way, you can't go wrong.

With the latest drivers, it can indeed control plugins, and has an
onscreen "softLCD" display which is the width of the controller...

OK...this is news to me. Still as the soft display is on my Mac monitor
I would have to keep turning my head 90 degrees all the time and it
wouldn't be quite ideal so I still prefer 01 X to Tascam. My purchase
is still a year away though so a lot can happen :-)
