Hi all,
I just got a dual 2.0Ghz G5 with 2.5GB RAM and upgraded to Logic Pro
6.41, with the MOTU 896HD (firewire) as my audio interface.
When I load Atmosphere into an audio instrument and play while the
sequencer is stopped, I hear a sudden 'pop' every once in a while.
It's not a digital sync issue, since all my digital gear is synced
to a mster clock source. I have my buffer setting for the 896 at
64, but it was still happening at 128. This is really strange to
me. Does anybody have a similar experience or knows about this?
Also, a few of my outboard gear are connected directly into the 896
(via a digital mixer) so that I can apply plug ins and bounce all
inside the sequencer through the aux channels. Once in a while, I
play on the keys and no sound comes out. Playing the sequencer for
a second usually solves the problem. Is this normal?
I used a Pro Tools Mix system before and I never had any of these
problems. Is it that even with the 'powerful' G5, it can't handle
all the processing coming in through the interface, or is it the
interface itself?
Thanks a lot in advance.

first off make sure you have the latest version of the Atmosphere AU (check
Spectrasonic's site). then make sure you have the latest driver for the
896HD - MOTU released an update yesterday (v. 1.09).
a buffer size of 64 or 126 is still really low, even for a dual G5 methinks.
especially when you consider how CPU hungry Atmosphere is.
when this happens do you have Logic's "system performance" floater
window
open? would be interesting to see if the Audio performance meter clips.
another thing to consider is that some of Atmosphere's patches are more CPU
hungry than others, and as such, reducing the # of voices can help.

odd. definitely download the latest 896HD driver. i have the 896 (not the
HD) and haven't experienced this. is there a setting within the CueMix
application that puts the interface to sleep when idle for a period of time?
how are you monitoring your setup? do you have speakers connected directly
to the main outs of the 896HD or are you using a mixer or some other
interface?
I ask because the only time i experience what you're experiencing is when i
haven't output sound for a while. i have a pair of Mackie HR824s connected
directly to the outs of my 896, and the Mackie's are set to
"auto", i.e.,
they will shut off if no audio signal is received for a period of time. then
when it finally does receive an audio signal it takes a second or two for
the speakers to turn on and process the signal. it's a long shot but could
this be your problem?

not sure. i can't imagine it being the interface. have you thoroughly read
the 896HD manual and really familiarized yourself with CueMix DSP? I'm
pretty sure that with the latest incarnation you can have up to 4 inputs
monitored with zero latency. are you monitoring your outboard gear through
CueMix DSP or through Logic? if it's through Logic than maybe that's your
problem?

Hi Brian,
Thanks for your input. As you suggested, I downloaded the latest
driver for the 896HD, and so far, the random pops seem to have
vanished!
One more question, though, you said,
are you monitoring your outboard gear through

I didn't realize that you can monitor through CueMix while you're
running Logic. Right now, I have Audio Input objects set to the
corresponding inputs through which I have my outboard gear plugged
in, so I guess I'm monitoring through Logic. Is there a different
way using the CueMix?
Thanks again for your help.
