I've been trying to draw automation for Output 1-2, and I see no way to
manually add a track to the Arrange window that represents Output 1-2.
If I put the Output 1-2 audio object into Write or Latch mode and move
the fader while the transport is running, when I switch back to the
Arrange window a track has been added for Output 1-2, showing the
automation that I can then edit. This seems like a runaround, though;
I'd rather be able to add this track manually to the Arrange window and
draw my automation directly, rather than having to move the fader just
to add this track.
Is there a way to manually add a "track" for Output objects (or
busses,
for that matter) directly in the Arrange window? Am I missing something
simple (wouldn't be the first time)?

Command-click the object in the environment.

Sure there is! You just have to make sure the object appears at the arrange
window track list (which displays itself when you hold down the mouse button
over a tack name in the arrange window, left panel). Select the object in
the environment, press "h" (show parameters) and tic the little
square
"icon" (first small tic box of the parameter box).
Best wishes

In the Environment, you need to turn on this AudioObject's icon
so it actually shows up in the Arrange's TrackChoice flipmenu.
Or you can use the Environment Tool that looks like a MIDI jack,
and click on the chosen AudioObject. Then this object replaces
whatever object that happened to be in the selected track in
the Arrange. So be careful, and pre-select a track in the Arrange
that you don't mind changing.

If you press COMMAND, then this changes your cursor to
the secondary tool, whichever you've happened to have chosen.
So it's possible that your secondary tool is indeed the correct
tool for doing this (the one that looks like a MIDI jack), but it's
possible that it isn't (maybe it's the eraser? maybe it's the
pencil?)
So the always correct answer is to use the "MIDI Jack" tool in
the Environment to force a an Environment object to go in
the Arrange's selected track.

Wow, thanks... that seems so obtuse, I don't think I ever would've
figured that out! So this leads to a secondary question, why is the
icon parameter for the output objects deselected by default? That
really doesn't make any sense...
I've modified my autoload accordingly, so I'll always have that
available easily in the future. Thanks to everyone who replied, I
appreciate it!

Makes perfect sense to me because then the Adaptive Track Mixer will not
become astronomically huge ;-)

What I meant by "obtuse" is: what does "icon" have
anything to do with
"will be listed in the Arrange window". Seems like an extremely
poor
choice of nomenclature to me...

Well, in that sense, books are also obtuse, cause since nowhere is stated
that you have to read them left to right, how is one supposed to make any
sense of these things ?
Enabling the icon makes objects selectable in the track instrument list. Get
used to it and use it to your advantage.

Previously, the flipmenu in the Arrange that allowed you
to select the type of track actually showed icons in this
list. Sadly, in order to use an Apple-standard hierarchical
menu this feature disappeared.
So at one time, it wasn't so obtuse to turn off/on an Environment
object's icon in order to have it appear in the Arrange's flipmenu.

Yes, I agree. But I kind of got used to it from using Logic for more than a
decade ;-)

I think that's quite a stretch for an analogy... are you saying that it
DOES make sense that the label "icon" doesn't actually mean
"icon"?
"Getting used to it" is certainly something that's easy enough to
do,
but it doesn't make it a good label just because it can be gotten used
to.

Maybe. Can you read music ? I can't. And i can tell you i wouldn't notice a
lot of things in a score where sight readers would claim it was printed in
big bold letters across the entire staff. It's all about perception and
training. Put me in front of DP and i would miserably fail.
Like f-erenc pointed out, there was the link of the icon showing up (or not)
in the track instrument list. I didn't even remember this. I read it in the
manual once on, like, v1.7 and that was it. I never even put a thought in
the matter whether it was intuitive or not.

I'm not sure what you're referring to, but now I'm afraid... very
afraid.
