Subject: Firewire interface for Laptop
Message #158376
Quick question for the LUGers... I need a portable, reliable Firewire audio interface to take on the road with my powerbook. Anyone got any recommendations or warnings? I seem to recall many people having latency and driver problems with the Midiman 410 - which is too bad since it seems like the closest thing to what I need. Has the situation improved? And how about the Powercore firewire? Good or bad experiences? thanks for any feedback you can provide.

I wholeheartedly recommend the MOTU 896 or 896hd...I have used them since the 896 was originally released, and have NEVER had a problem. The preamps are "decent", but certainly usable for vox, and a good microphone will show itself well. If you need more than the 8 inputs, you can connect an ADAT expander (i use a Presonus piece) to go to 16 inputs....this combo lets me mic a killer drum set and record live bands/orchestras with ease... Good luck... And I use Powercore firewire with my home main studio...ditto...never a problem, and I even use other things on the same firewire bus... Great gear. Good luck!

In my experience, the FW 410 is still not there. Crashes repeatedly on my 17" Powerbook MacOS X 10.3. A great system, good software, etc, but just can't get it to be stable.

I monitor directly to overcome it... George www.utopiaparkwaymusic.com My Logic Audio tutorial: http://www.vtc.com/logic.htm Now both Mac OSX and Windows XP... the only way to fly ;-)
