Subject: Is OSX really *this* inefficient?
Message #158269
Hi, I'm priming myself for the move from OS 9 to X; today I pulled up a pretty hefty song (for me), about 32 tracks and 12 instruments with maybe 2-4 plugs per object. In OS9 and ASIO, I never got past 3/4 on the CPU meter. Now, in X, the same song maxes out. In fact, when playing a blank part of the song, e.g., 16 bars past the last region, the CPU meter still hovers at 50%. Yikes! If I bypass all the instruments and effects, it drops to 0. I'm used to Logic/OS9 being extremely efficient, only using resources when it's actually using them. Is OSX a different story? Or is it just that I'm using the built-in outputs under X and ASIO under 9? I'm having trouble believing Logic is suddenly so DP-ish in it's processing abilities. I'd appreciate any insight. u b i k

OS9 seems to be the G4's best OS whereas OSX works great on a G5. I am running OS9 on a G4 and it works great. I won't even consider OSX until I get a G5. Kind regards, Dave

I noticed the same thing making the move, but the G5 made it irrelevant. ; ) I had a song that played in 9 but not X with nothing but two instances of Absynth. I sent it to Brian Clevinger, the developer of Absynth, and he advised me (in the e-mail equivalent of hushed tones) that OSX was less efficient and that was the reason it wouldn't play. Are all your instruments and plugs by Emagic? I'd be interested to Bypass them one at a time and see which ones are CPU hogs in their OSX version... Sonny Keyes SKa Music Toronto

I would just like to suggest that maybe you ought to get familiar with OS X a bit before. Getting a new computer and learning a new operating system at the same time could be a troublesome experience if you have a dead lines to keep. Subject: [GEN] Sample rate error messages in Logic
Message #158329
This is a reply to #158269.
I have Logic Platinum 4.81 (MAC OS9) running on a MAC G4. I have a MOTU 2408mkII (PCI-324) soundcard. Whenever I play a track in Logic they are all garbled and I get pops, clicks, and static---sounds like typical digital sync errors. At first, I thought it was due to my Yamaha 01v and 2408mkII not being synced. But now I am (finally) getting the following error message in Logic: "Error while trying to synchronize Audio & MIDI. Sample rate 37713 recognized. Check conflict between LOGIC Audio & External Device." However, the sample rate changes each time I get the error message (it varies from about 36600 to 41050). I figure my 2408mkII has gone bad or I have a corrupted ASIO driver. Have any of you experienced this problem? If so, any suggestions? I have tried to install new ASIO drivers, but believe it or not, my MAC locks up (and I must reboot) when I try to open any .sit or .hqx file containing an ASIO driver. Very strange. So I have reinstalled the original ASIO drivers that I have been using for about 2 years....but this doesn't help. Any ideas? Thank you for your help. I am under a deadline. But I am trying to remain calm (&$^#%!!). Kind regards, Dave

It depends ! I miss the beginning of the thread ! If this chap has already a computer that is working he can get the time to learn on his new computer with OS X, but that mean he must keep his old computer. For myself I bought a G5 2x2 in November and I am still using my G4 533MP. I am waiting for a fix from NI to use only my G5 for Music. I have decided to keep my G4 533 MP for Internet and other task and keep my G5 only for music. If I have Load problems I can always use my G4 as a Sampler for NI instruments. It make a cheap sampler ! because it worth nothing ! Also If I have my G5 down I can use my G4 !
